Hey all,

A friend of mine stopped by the other day and asked me to come over to his place and check out the jeep he picked up from another friend in Montana.  Today I stopped by:

At first it looks like there is not much there but this jeep does have some significant data.  The jeep is #18023:

Forgive these pics.  I did not have my camera so I took these with my iPad.
He has the title and all tags except for the firewall tags.  One thing I found interesting is that the frame tag is mounted to the outside of the frame horn:
..... and no rivet holes on the inside:

The jeep was originally pasture green and and it has four solid wheels 90/90.
You can still see the green stripe.

Anywho here are several pics:
Still has the column shift tranny but it has been fitted with a cane shifter.

Some interesting tidbits:
ACM#:  8432
Tranny:  Casting date: 7-30-45, Assembly date B-9-46
T'Case:  Casting date: J-11-45, 3/4" intermediate shaft.
Square washer windshield (lollypops)
0-60 speedo black numbers on white background.

I could not find an assembly date on the front diffs, but I did find a date on the rear diffs.  Strange as it may seem, the date looks to me like 1 01 46. .... I realize that it is unlikely that they were stamped on new years day so tomorrow I will stop by with my good camera.  get a good shot and post it so I can get youns' opinions.

As you can see in the pics, someone installed an F- head and it runs.  He is debating whether he wants to restore it or not.  I told him I would ask around to see if someone has an early '46 motor that would be a good fit.  Does anyone have one?Big smile

Sean,  when I confirm the axle date, I'll submit the data to the database

Fun find! That looks like a project. What an early 2A.

He greased all the joints and was planning on taking it for a spin.  I used the screwdriver to scrape all the gunk off the components I was trying to get numbers off of.

Here are some pics of the axle stamp:

What do youns' think the date is?

I also added some pics to my photobucket.
Three of the solid wheels are Autumn yellow with green stripes (underneath layers of paint).  This one here was not on the jeep:

It has 5 holes drilled on the outside of the flange and the valve stem is on the inside of the wheel:

Ever see that before?  Looks like it may have OD paint.  He is going to remove the tire and measure to see if it may be a 4" wide rather than 4.5".

Anywho; after talking with him last night, he is wondering if the amount of work to restore it is worth it.  I'm not saying that it is for sale, but if anyone wants to talk to him, let me know and I'll hook you guys up.  He does not have internet.  Still looking for a potential motor candidate.

Jeff,
I did a quick search for a pic I remember seeing, couldn't find it...
Could that drilled out wheel be for one of those "tire mounted" rope winch set ups?
I remember seeing a picture of one, maybe, last year...
Might explain the valve on the inside of the wheel, as well.
Just a thought.
Nice rig.

Could be for a wheel weight of some sort too. That would explain both the holes and the valve stem on the inside

Found it!
Kinda looks like it...
On second thought, I now see the valve stem on the outside of the rim in the pic...
Never mind...

That's what it looks like to me too. You wouldn't think they would have been working on New Years day.

curious that it's not 01-01-46, (but then I'm thinking of consistency) LOL

Just a thought on the 1-01-46 date stamp.

Maybe, just maybe Dana-Spicer ran a third shift.  If the shift started at 11 P.M., the fellow who date stamped the axles had a whole hour to remind himself why he choose to work the Grave Yard Shift on New Years Day.  Most likely he was just thinking of the the Shift Premium that was in the his weekly pay envelope!

wow Low, that's some great information and puts some rationale to the axle stamp. I would have thought they would have been shut down. this information would seem they were working, unless.....and this is a real reach. That they knew what qtys they were doing per day and to avoid a gap in numbers they stamped the items with the new years eve and day dates days ahead.

A Foundry never shuts down for a holiday, they run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week .
Been there done that in my youth . It is cheaper to pay double time labor vs the cost of getting the furnace back up to operating temperature .
