Hi,
I have one part of my original screen in a very bad condition. Any idea or advice about how could I repair this part? Actually is very weak shape and maybe it can be loose. Front view Back view Cheers and tks in advance for your replies.

The screen was called "hardware cloth" when I was young. Don't know what is available now, or where you live. It seems like smaller mesh than what is available now.

Hi Ralf,
tks for your comment. Sorry if my question was not clear. I know would be imposible to find that small screen today. I'm worry about the other screen (the big square one). The strap is welded to this screen and today is broken. My question was about how could I fix the strap to the square screen (maybe with a point of weld?) Hope is more clear my question now. Tks again for your opinion. Cheers.

I did a number of posts on this subject last year. Search and you will find the thread.
McMaster Carr Has the wire and correct hardware cloth. I recommend stainless hardware cloth. But of a job to replace everything and re-assemble, but probably worth it.

If you jump at New River Gorge Airport, I'm across the river at Fayetteville Airport. I can show you more CJ2A's in an hour than you can see at most Jeep shows. Can't we Johnny Bravo?
Buenoares is in southern Ohio. |

Charlie, if you try to weld it you may blow through it. The metal is too weak. You may be able to TIG weld it or maybe solder.
Guys am I missing something here? Charlie lives in Argentina...

I would first try silver solder. It is pretty strong.

What about grinding off the rivet tops and drilling them out. Then put small metal plates on each side and bolt or rivet the clamps back on?

Machine screws could be used after drilling out the rivets. The heads could be filled and dressed to look like rivet heads. I have an original chaff screen as well and have been contemplating restoration and puzzled over the removal and replacement of the clips. A project that I wil tackle once the Willys is done.

As Mike S mentions and his info shows. These were never intended to do anything about bugs. They are designed to keep hay and straw out of the radiator when working in the fields.
Charlie Jeep Silver solder is just that solder made from various alloys of Silver. They run from a soft silver solder melting around 400-450 degrees F Which can be used with a good Soldering gun up to what is referred to as Hard Silver Solder 1200-1400 degrees F (its actually more of a brazing process when using this level and requires a torch) |

I think your local home improvement store would have that fine mesh screen if you wanted to replace it.
I just made new screens for the windows in my house couple weeks ago and in the screen section they had normal window screen and next to it they had window screen labeled pet safe or anti pet scratch or something along that line. it appeared to be the same fine mesh window screen but made of metal screen material to keep cats from slicing it and escaping out the window. this was at my local Home Depot in Kennewick Washington

I believe you can get the hardware cloth down to 1/8" and bigger than that, we use to buy it at any hardware store to re do the foundation vents on homes and apartments

Perhaps that's why they're called Chaff Screens! Thanks for the quick explanation of what silver solder is.

Here is a past discussion on restoring Chaff Screens. The original frame and hanging hardware spring clips/hooks were the only items I could not replace. I could purchase new or find used the steel 1/2" hardware cloth, the steel 1/8" wire mesh cloth, the expanded steel cloth, and the steel rivets.
