Topic: CARB ISSUES? Ask scoutpilot. Posted: 02 Sep. 2013 at 9:01pm |
I should have done this a year ago. Better late than never. With the permission of the powers that be, I would like to start a new thread where you can get answers to your carb and fuel related problems in general and specifically with your Carter WO. I rebuild WO's for a living. I adjust and test them before they go back to the customer. I am available to answer questions from 0700 to 1900 Eastern time.

Maybe we can convince others whose expertise lies elsewhere in these old jeeps to do the same and avoid errors and subsequent issues that lead to folks who encounter problems to lose interest because they just don't know what to ask.

Ditto's Tim....and at any hour of the day!!! If scoutpilot can't solve what ever problem you may be having with your WO.....we will have let a generation vital to keeping these jeeps in circulation and their history ALIVE, slip into the fleeting sands of the wind.

Rick, you are certainly an awesome force on this forum, thank you for being who you are and your incredible wealth of knowledge. I wish I could share even a smidgeon of what you give here but I am not worthy. If I was Haines Garage and had High fives I would give you a 10!

With regard to how the entire motor system needs all of its parts functioning correctly, I give you this little ditty;
For Want of a Nail For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost. For want of a rider the message was lost. For want of a message the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

Scoutpilot, I have a question about the idle speed adjusting screw and the throttle lever it sits in. My lever fails to return fully to it's idle position when the accelerator is released and the retracting spring pulls the adjusting rod and other linkage back into position, resulting in a fast idle. If I tap the accelerator while idling, the idle speed usually drops to normal. I installed a new retracting spring and all the other linkage appears to return properly. I've articulated all the linkage manually and lubricated it all several times - nothing seems to stick. Other than moving the idle speed screw in and out, I haven't adjusted any linkage yet. The carb is a Carter 636S. Do you have any suggestions ?

Scoutpilot, it is just great you take time to do this!!!
I have a "new" carter from Walcks and after adjusting the idle screw I really do not need to do anything with the carb. Will it need adjustment over time? Cleaning? I have a filter in front of the Carter carb.

Dan. I need to see how you have the linkage set up. Can you post a picture?

Sten. I see you took your time on your set up. Kudos. If you will keep the carb as clean as I see it now, (I know you will) you will enjoy plenty of fun time on the road, and off. I clean mine when I do an oil change and tune up. Don't forget to drain, clean and replenish the oil in the air filter. Carb cleaner inside and out. Pull the filter bowl and element and clean them. You shouldn't need to go into the carb unless you notice a performance problem with it. Keeping the PCV and Heat Riser functioning correctly will also enhance your experience.

Mine is getting to where it will stall at idle if the choke isn't slightly out. Where are the passages to clean for that?

It sounds like low idle RPM or a vacuum leak. If your idle is set to 600-700 and you still have this problem, take a can of starting fluid, or a handheld propane torch (unlit, of course) and beginning at the carb/intake studs, play the propane/spray short bursts of the fluid and work your way completely around and up the carb. If your RPM changes while doing this, the spot where you just were is leaking. If it has been a long time since a rebuild, I would initially suspect the throttle shaft.
