    Posted: 22 May 2009 at 10:58pm
It's time to make plans for the 2009 Fall Color Tour!  Do you see your Jeep in this lineup?

If not, then it's time to make plans to get into this year's lineup .
We're planning on at least 3 days of rides again.  Mark your calendars for 25, 26, and 27 September to come and join us.  This is the weekend after the Fall Midwest Willys Reunion.  Why not plan your vacation to start with the reunion in Missouri, and end with great fall colors in Colorado??  For anyone who wants to come out early I've got way too many places to ride for anyone to get bored.  Our home, the Thirsty Dirt Ranch, will be ride central again this year.  And we're planning on another Saturday evening feast.  We'll develop the details of that later.

I'll publish a list of hotels and motels in the area later, but anyone who wants to camp is very welcome to stay here on our place.  We've got lots of room.  And for folks who want to camp indoors, we've got lots of room in our remodeled game room downstairs.  And Mt. Princeton Hot Springs are just a few miles away for those late afternoon soaks!

We had four states represented last year.  We'd like to see more on this year's tour.  I hope we're getting this announced far enough in advance that everyone can get it on their vacation calendar, and join us for some great times and great rides.  So talk to your spouse, talk to your buddies, talk to your buddies spouse and get them all to join us this year!

Here's another photo from the 2008 tour showing some of the great aspen color we saw time and time again.

Lew:

I saw Wally and his wife Audry at the Car Show at Piflers today.  I mentioned both Bruce's planned camp out trip, and Mike & Ellen's fall tour ride.  (I am ashamed to admit I didn't have the 2A at the show today; took the mid-engine 327 V8 Corvair instead).

Lots of fun.

Lew,
We're looking forward to having you and Frankie back here with us for this year's rides.  Only this time I won't need to be pull started anymore!!  We finally fixed the charging system!

Luis,
We'll miss push-starting you on Saturday's ride, but perhaps between now and then, you can join me for a recon trip as we explore the routes we'd like to use.  A good co-pilot is always appreciated.  And we'll have some good rides planned for Friday and Sunday too.  I'm looking at a 20-30 mile route that I can take the Electro-Willys on.

Bob,
We always have spare seats, and we'd like to fill them up.  Make plans to come join us.  I recall last year you were talking about working on a tow vehicle so you could drag a jeep along.  Did you ever get it done?  We're a good two days drive from Spokane, if you're planning on roading it.

Gary,
Next time you see Wally, be sure to tell him about how much we'd like to have him along on the ride.  I know he wanted to come last year but Audry was in that car wreck.  I hope she's recovered OK.  Speaking of being in wrecks, how's your wife doing?  And the new car?  We're looking forward to seeing you riding with us again this year.

I've talked with a few more local guys and they are interested in joining us for this event.  I'll be scouting routes thru the summer so if anyone is passing by this area, give us a call and stop in.  We'll take you on a scouting trip to look at possible new routes to get the time and mileage and viewpoints.

Mike, I would not mind going up for a few test runs. I'll be up in BV every last saturday of the month. I could do an overnight and a Sunday ride, keep me updated.

Mike;

Audrey said she was doing well.  It just took some time for the ribs to heal.  They are thinking about coming in September.

My wife is doing well, and the newer (but used) Explorer is not dented (yet, anyway).  I saw Lew, Frankie and the boys at the 1st Golden Super Cruise 2 weeks ago.

Please do make a list of what is needed, and let us know.

Luis,

Let's plan on riding the 28th of June, as long as the weather cooperates (no snow!).  This weekend we have a wedding to attend.  It's a true western style wedding out at my sister's ranch.  I've gotta go practice my marksmanship.  We're doing a 21 gun salute to the groom with lever action rifles.

Gary,
I'm glad to hear both ladies are doing well.  I think it'll be great if both of them can join us this year.  The list for food will come out in a month or two.  don't want to do it too far in advance.  That sure was some good eatin' last year.  Unfortunately the elk didn't cooperate last year and the freezer's empty so unless my early season tag comes through, we'll have to maybe go with buffalo chilli instead.

Larry,
Let's see:
Out of state tag $100
fuel, ammo, meat bag, processor, beer,  $300
walking on foot for hours only to have some clown on an ATV spook the buck you were after.
Comming home skunked.

or

Priceless!!!

Lew -
You described my last Wyoming antelope hunt almost to a tee - only it was a Cessna 172 landing that spooked the buck instead of an ATV Cry.  But, speedgoats are definitely a challenge and my wife enjoys the challenge of finding the best way to prepare them for the table Thumbs Up.

Larry - Do you take the 2A out antelope hunting?  We did that quite a bit when I was growing up - mostly just a good excuse to go for a jeep ride Big smile.

Lew....
That's a great description of several of the hunts that I've been on.....

We were very successful last year. We each got two doe/fawn tags last year and filled them easily. I will hopefully have two more tags for this year. If I don't get the tags then I will be on the fall colors tour. I'm a meat hunter so I usually fill my tags. Antelope are quite tasty.

Ryan, I didn't take the Jeep last year....really don't need it out there...but I have been considering it for the same reason you stated...a great excuse for a Jeep ride.

Lemield, I just got my tags for elk and antelope for Colorado.  It sounds like you've got some good recipes for antelope.  WHEN, not if but WHEN you come on up for the color tour, please remember to bring some of those recipes.

For everyone else, I thought I'd share a nice photo of a road I explored recently to see if it would meet our high standard for a nice drive for the color tour.  I dunno, what do you all think???

Perfect!  Put it on the list.  Looks like another great trail.
I have had some of the Wyoming antelope that grew up along the N. Platte and ate the crops all night and slept on the hill sides in the day.
That would make some great fall chili !!!

I was hoping to go scouting some local jeep roads with Viasa yesterday, but unfortunately he could not go along.  Too bad because we found some really good routes.  Including a challenging ride through some really beautiful valleys that we think are worth seeing, but the drive requires some skill full driving.  We may offer this one up as an option for those who are not faint of heart.

Anyway, here's some photos from our quest for a better fall color tour route.  It's a tough job riding these roads, but someone's gotta do it.

OK, so I didn't find too many aspen out on this ridge, but it was a nice view and we were able to watch the thunderstorm off to our right do it's thing in the sky while we basked in the sunshine.  That's Mt. Princeton, one of Colorado's 14,000 ft mountains in the background.  That's about 20 miles from where I'm sitting.

OK now this is getting better.  At least now I've got some aspen near the jeep.  But it's just not exactly what we're looking for.  Guess I'd better keep looking.

Now THIS is more like it!  Lots of aspen trees in lots of sizes.  Covered in green leaves that'll turn to gold this fall.  Wild roses all around just about to bloom.  And a nice little 2-track road to follow around the bend.

Well, my wife and I found some really nice hidden corners and spacial views in our quest yesterday.  And we found at least one new route that we're going to add to the GRAND TOUR for this year.  We've still got lots of exploring to do.  If anyone wants to come along and help out, good company is always welcome.  We're getting Viasa back on our trek list for later this summer.
