MIke,

This is the 3rd time I have said I am coming so this may be the year.  Wife has vacation time, the to do list on jeep is small, and the revolution doesn't start till november.

mrshorthood,
I'm the chief wrangler for this rodeo.  So post your questions here on the forum, or send me a PM and I'll get you an answer pronto.  Our home is 'ride central'.  We're located about 20 miles north of Salida, CO, near Mt. Princeton Hot Springs.

ndrtkr,
Dehydration is not good for you, especially at these elevations.  So drink often, but do it responsibly.

willys54wagon,
We'll be looking for you to join us this year.  After all, what other flat-fender jeep event gives you great scenery, great comraderie, great rides to learn how well your jeep really will do in the back country, and the chance to see and learn and do the fixes we'd all like to do on our jeeps.  And that's not mentioning the great dinners we've had in the past.

Mrshorthood,
I'd be glad to share any info you need.  Since others might also be interested, I'll start by posting some basic info here.  We host 3 days of rides for anyone who wants to attend.  You can show up for one day, or all three.  There is no charge for attendance other than a voluntary contribution toward the Saturday night pot luck feast.  If you show up early or want to stay later, we have some good rides that are self-guided.  There are enough trails and dirt roads to keep a jeep busy for 2 weeks just in this valley.

Friday's rides are usually easy rides to check out your jeep's ability to operate between 8,000 and 10,000 feet elevation.  The air is thinner up here and we want to be sure that you and your jeep will be in good shape for the long ride.

Saturday is the long ride day.  We will travel between 70 and 100 miles, mostly in 4WD and low range.  Plenty of stops along the way to enjoy scenery, swap stories, make minor repairs, and eat or drink.  We try to include a ghost town visit, lots of aspen stands in brilliant fall color, and occasionally some wildlife.  We'll start about 9:00 and finish about 5:00.  Then we have the big feast!  We try to include trails from mild to challenging, but nothing that risks damage to your jeep.

Sunday morning we'll go for a short ride, often up to St. Elmo, an old mining town with a few year-round residents, and tons of chipmunks.  A visit to the general store there is a step back in time.

If you want to tent or RV camp, we have plenty of room at our place to set up your camp.  If you would prefer to stay in a motel/hotel, there a several nice ones in Buena Vista or Salida.  Also some nice Bed&Breakfast places nearby.  Everyone who stays in hotels leave their jeep and jeep-hauler-trailer at our place.  We have a cozy little garage, and we usually get all the jeeps inside for the night.  The shop is pretty well equipped and we can usually fix minor problems easily.

Night time temps will be frosty by then.  But daytime temps will often be up in the 70's.  Our dry thin air often gives us 50-60 degrees difference in temperature in one day.  A good combination to keep you warm during the long ride is a sweatshirt with a windbreaker.  That way you can add/peal layers to match the climate.

Breakfasts and lunchs are on your own.  We usually try to hit a local restaurant for Friday supper.  And Saturday supper is the big potluck feast at our house.

I recommend looking at the last 2 years of posts for this event to get an idea of what we saw, did, fun we had, and folks who attended.  We're here to have a great time, and every flat fender is invited! Thumbs Up

Hi , thanks for the info.  I am from the east and have a flat fender, 1950 cj3a and can not trailor it out there  for the week end.  Is there any place to rent a jeep.  Your trip sounds like so much fun, I would love to bring one of my jeeps but just dont have the time to haul it there and back  in five days.   Thanks . any suggestions??

My first thought is to do what jpet does when he goes on the road, arrange to stop by and visit lots of other jeepers along the way.  Make a 2 week vacation out of it.  Take your time and do some sight-seeing both ways.  Perhaps you can convoy in with someone from the midwest, or back east, who would also like to join us.

Another option is to fly out here and rent a jeep.  There are at least 4 places between Buena Vista and Salida that rent modern jeeps.  And we've had "roundfender" jeeps with us before.  But it really is a great opportunity for some beautiful "I was there" shots of you and your flatty high in the mountains.  What a great memory-maker for you and your jeep!

A third option is to ride along with one of our regulars.  We usually have 2-3 jeeps with only one or two people in them, so there are always some empty seats.  This would be a great way to meet new friends.  Will it be just you, or will you bring any friends/family along?

Now that the snow is leaving the mid-level peaks (9-11,000 ft) it's time to start scouting for possible new routes for this years big color tour ride.  I'd like to invite anyone who is passing through this area, or who would like to come out for some summer riding to get in touch with me and join me for some of the scouting trips.  I'd sure appreciate some company on some of the routes I plan to explore.  So with, or without, your Willys, let me know if you can join me.

Mike,

We've got your tour on our calendar this year.  I definitely wanted to do this at least once before you decided that the hassle was too much!  Thanks for continuing to make it happen. Clap  (I don't think that I'm going to be able to schlep out there to help you scout the possible routes, though. Big smile )

Sam, I'm really glad to hear that you're going to join us this year!  You're going to have a great time up here in the mountains.  I hope you'll be able to stay for more than just the 3 days of the rides.  As I recall, your wife is a photographer.  We'll work hard to be sure she has lots of great scenery and old jeeps to capture.  Wink

Now about that scouting business.  Perhaps you should come out in August with one of your jeeps to help with the scouting.  Then just leave it here and come back for the color tour in September.  Then bring it back home.  Thumbs Up

Sam, that's good news! I can't recommend the Fall Colors Tour enough! With my son heading off to school this fall, my daughter has her hopes on coming...and I've been looking forward to the trip since I pulled off the last trail! Mike is an exceptional host and I can tell he's working hard to accommodate your attendance! I am pretty sure I have CJ3A Bob convinced to go this year from here in the flatlands. Allen and Barb missed last year because of some "bean" issues so they should be on board this year. Mike may be surprised at the growth in attendance! I'm fairly sure Jeff will make it this year too! For all those coming along I-70 in KC, you can bed down and rest at my place...its about 10 hrs from here to Mikes. I highly recommend this trip...if it were in the AAA listings, it would be a 5-star recommendation!

A "5-star recommendation"??!!  C'mon now, cut that out! Embarrassed How's a guy supposed to improve the show if everybody already thinks it's perfect??  Where's the challenge in that?  Wink LOL

AHA!!  So the challenge becomes "lowering your expectations so that anything will exceed them!"

Let's see......  really rough roads.........  abuse your jeep...........  lotsa dead trees.........  cold, rainy weather...........  lousy company..........  poor food..........  high fees, no service...........  melt all the early snow into mud.............  flatten the mountains...........  nuthin but brown leaves........

Yeah, that ought to do it!  Now I need 2 things; a good pitchman to help sell the "low quality version", and I'd better get rid of all the good-time photos from the last 2 years!  LOLLOL
