Some may remember that I lost, or may have never had, a box of different governors.

So I figure the best way to fix that, is to buy more.  But DANG they are expensive.  So I see someone in CA (I'm in OH) advertising a willys motor, that has a single speed governor on it.  I contact him about selling it, and he says make offer.  I decide to not bother, since it's a single speed.

Then he emails me, and says he sold motors(both were stationary units) and kept the governors.  Wait, governors?  Plural?  I ask for pics, and after a little searching, figure out one is a NOVI.  170 bucks later, they arrive in the mail...

I know I need a handle, but otherwise, looks like all the pieces are there.

You should be able to save the Novi governor and the brackets are worth a few dollars

Found a couple of threads here about the novi, with parts numbers.  Only thing is I don't see a pin, or set screw, holding on pulley.  Are these just pressed on?

I may sell the single speed, or I might play with it some.

You will have to take it apart and press in on and off.  If your not able to do this a good machine shop will be able to help you will that.  Do not use a wheel puller as you will split the pulley.

Harvey, what a screaming deal you got on those. The pulley is pressed on. When I rebuilt mine, I put a bearing puller behind the pulley and put just a bit of pressure on it, then gave it a bit of heat and it popped off. I can't tell you how afraid I was that it was going to break, and when it popped, I almost jumped out of my skin thinking I'd broken the pulley.

Everything was fine. I rebuilt and resealed the governor and it works well.

Using a bearing puller and a little heat is the way to remove the pulley.  Governors are not mind but Stretch's  and he got a screaming deal on those.  Hope he will post more questions and photos

I was worried as heck, since this was a ship deal through craigslist.  But guy was great to deal with, and they came exactly as he said.

Yep, I'm back at it.  I did use a puller, but I was careful. Tapped the jack screw on the puller while it was under tension, and it came off.

Took all the brackets, levers, and springs off, sandblasted it all, and primed.  Painting the levers, springs and pulleys black, and governor body gray.

Wow, these things are simple inside, nothing to them...

Ordered seals.  Bearings look/feel good.

Whats with the spring loaded linkage to carb?  It has a spring inside, allowing one end to collapse inside, about 1/2 inch.

Some pics.

Looking good!  You do not use the spring loaded linkage with the novi governor.  The spring loaded is for the stationary governors in your group.  Did you replace the shaft bearing in housing rear looks worn in the photo

Darn it, ya made me go look...  Must be the camera, I didn't see any pitting, wear, or discoloration on the rollers.  Shaft fits nice.  I did check the front bearing also, it spins nice, didn't see anything wrong with it.

Where can I find the clevis for the cable, and handle/cable assembly?

I'll have to get a good pic and measurements for the correct linkage to carb.  Shouldn't be too hard to fit something that works.  I can probably use the linkage I have somehow.

Stretch,    Mike has some real nice pics of his Novi mounted on this site. Go to the Parts list here on the home forum page and click on Special equipment and accessories, and you will find it. There is also some pics of the cable and handle linkage on there.  The rod measures from ball joint on carburetor to ball joint on governor on mine is 6 3/4". The ball joints are also available from aircraft suppliers.  You can make the governor speed control 'T' handle set up without to much trouble with the hardest thing finding the 'T' handle itself. I lucked out and found an original handle on Ebay when I made mine.

Best to replace but can always doing it later.  If front bearing was bad the rear cap bearing would be bad too or worn.  Run it and if it is quiet your set and if not it will rattle when running.   Good work and keep at it!

If I remember correctly the governor link is 1/4 inch rod 28 thread.  You have the ball sockets already on the linkage already.

The rod measures 5 1/2 inches long 28 thread and thread is 3/4 inch deep on too shaft each end 1/4 inch rod.
Look in Speedway Motors online for ball sockets your looking for remember 1/4  28 thread also on EPAY

Keep up the good work

Thanks for the info! I will thread some 1/4 rod. I have some throttle cables from military trucks, they are T handle, with the notches. I will have to dig one out and see how close it is.

Got the seals and gasket in.

Seal numbers are SKF 3687, and SKF 4355.   Forget which one is for the lever arm, and which one is for pulley shaft seal.

pics.

Looks great and you will enjoy using it as a cruise control.  I noticed that you have a plug in the place where a vent fitting should be, it is the one that goes in on a angle. I believe that one  goes where you have the plug with a square head.  The vent is a7/16 hexagon about 2" long  with a vent hole through the length, threaded 3/8X24 on one end and a small cap pressed on the other end over the points of the hex.
