I just came across a very nice set of tail light housings for my jeep.  I had forgotten that I had them.  After looking at them for a few minutes I realized why I had never put them on - I need the plugs that go into the back of them.  They seem to be made of unobtainium though.

If anyone has a lead on them, or has a nice clean workaround so that I can use these tail lights please pass the word on to me.  Thanks!

Can you post a picture of the housing you have?

Sure, but they are just Jeepster housings.  The only difference being the horizontal stud placement instead of the vertical studs like the CJ-2a has.  I'm planning on moving the studs to the correct spot, but I'm not putting any work into these if I can't get the correct plugs, or at least figure a way to make a regular 1157 socket work in them.

You might try contacting Vintage Wiring and see if they have (or know where they can be obtained) them.  Might get lucky, or at least get some idea of availability.

Thanks for that advice.  I forgot about that outfit.  During my hiatus it seems that I have forgotten more about jeeps than I currently know.  I'll just have to relearn it all!

Here are a couple of pics I took of the tail lights this morning.  They are in really beautiful condition.  The glass is perfect.  It's molded Stimsonite and NACO.  Aside from the mounting studs they appear to be identical to to the CJ-2a tail light housings.  I'll just have to repaint them black after I move the studs and they will be great.

I think this picture shows an assembled view of the plug, as you called it.  I've not taken it apart, so I'm not sure what it looks like by itself, but, from your pictures, it looks as though the plug or the connector would have the socket for the bulb.  Is that correct?

No, that's not correct.

If you look at the pics I posted you can see that the tail light housing just has a tube in the back of it.  On each end of this tube are grooves which have the typical twist and lock function.  On the inside you would insert the bulb into the grooves, and on the outside you would insert the plug.  On the inside end of the plug there are two contacts.  These contacts are spring loaded and will make contact with the base of the bulb.

Is that your jeep in the pic above?  If so, all you have to do is twist the plug to the left and pull it out.  It is removable in the same way that the light bulb removes from the inside of the housing.

That is my Jeep.  So, conceptually, at least, the functions of a more typical bulb socket are split between the housing and the plug with the contacts being in the plug.  I guess that does make it a little more difficult to come up with a workaround.   I'll take it apart in a few days and get a closer look.

As I recall, rocnroll repurposed some Jeepster lights for his 2A pickup.  I wonder what he did for the plug?

Yes, you got it!  That is a great summary of the way it works.  Those little plugs are hard to find and I don't have a clue on how to work around the problem.  I might be able to figure out a way of adapting a pair contacts by molding them into the base somehow.

Another thought, Walck's make their own harnesses as well, and I've found various bits and pieces that weren't listed on their website, but they had them. I just called. (the part that comes to mind most recently was the little buttons that solder onto the end of the wires to make connection inside a bulb socket. Worth a phone call anyway.

That might also be the same part as the military jeeps, and I am pretty certain Ron Fitz over at G0503 stocks em if Walcks doesn't have em.

Last time I checked Walcks didn't have CJ sockets, of course they may now. The military socket is different. I did modify one to make it work. It looks like Pete Debella has a socket listed on is web-site....

Does "$P.O.R. R." mean, "If you have to ask, you can't afford it!"

Actually, that description refers to the "Parking light" not the tail light.  They would not be the same because the tail light socket/plug would have two contacts - one for the tail light filament and another for the brake light filament.  You'd want the tail light plug to add turn signals to the parking lights! Quote If anyone has a lead on them
Like Bill said, Ron F. has the MB plugs in repro (they're from MV Spares in Australia, top quality parts).  They should fit the civilian sockets, but ya might ask Ron to be sure, and ask about return if they don't fit:

http://www.mvspares.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22_24&products_id=44

I've got 4 different type plugs, 2 of which I'm certain are NOT CJ-2A, the other 2 may have been used interchangeably.  Photos at the bottom here:

http://www.CJ-2A.com/oldsite/repros/NACO/index.html

I'll get better photos of all 4.
