    Posted: 02 Apr. 2010 at 2:47am
So, when I got my jeep about four months ago I knew I needed to get new seat cushions and that I didn't like my best top soft top.  I looked everywhere and could not see myself spending $200 plus on seat cushions and $700+ on a new soft top (that did not come with a bikini top.)  So, after four months perusing this site (and looking at Jept's "Make your own Canvas top" post, thanks Jpet), I decided I could make my own cushions and top (even though I had never sewn before).  I made the cushions first, took a little longer than expected, but with my wife's help sewing, thanks Jackie, I finished both front sets.  Moved on to the soft top and it turned out better than expected.  My plans are to build the rest of the top to attach to the bikini top so I can take on and off what I need as I feel like it.

How does the top attach to the windshield? Is it stuck in a track?

It is sunbrella material from ebay stock #6008, waterproof, and is suppose to resist sun fading really well.  I bought 12yrds by 60" for like $60.  The top bow is a slight modification from what I had on my old soft top.  The front of the top is held on by sliding the material through a channel in the windshield.  I sewed a piece of nylon rope in the top in order to make it thick enough to slide in the channel.

How did you upholster the seats... could you post instructions from the very beginning? I only have seat frames, nothing else...
Nice job by the way!

I will post some directions.  I will have to sit and think about it.  I didn't really have a plan when I started.

Nice job.
Hey, you know that you can shorten the wiper motor arms in just a few minutes.
Use a cut off wheel and carefully cut the threaded portion, it cuts easy it is just brass.
Then cut the shaft back with enough clearence to install the wiper arm.
They will look much cleaner when installed.

Hi, I too am a Noob, like what you did, just have the seat frames, I'm assuming plywood makes a base right? Got a how to done up yet?  Greatly interested.

I have no pictures, but will do my best to rescribe what I did and how I did it. First, I ordered some sunbrella material from eBay stock #6008. I am not sure of the length as I need enough for the seats and the top. I then traced out a piece of hardwood (not plywood!!) that was close to the same size as my seat cushion (bottom only). I then purchased foam from hancock fabricks. For the bottoms I think I used three inch thick foam and the back I used two inch, it's a personal choice. I traced the back of the seat on the foam and then cut it out and did the same for the seat cushion. I coated the wood for the bottom cushion in several coats of varnish. Then I placed the fabric on the floor, then placed the cushion down and then placed the hard wood down on top of that. I folded the fabric over everything and pinned the edges so that when I sewed each corner and flipped it inside out, the excess would be on the inside. Will continue with the rest of the how to later today.

I am officially inspired now.  I've been thinking about making my own seat covers for a while but haven't had the courage.  Now I think I'm going to start looking for some materials!

This is a picture of how I made the cushions, this is after I did the initial sewing and then flipped it inside out, the wood goes on top of this, then the fabric is folded over and stapled into the wood.
