I have been searching for a good lube for my steering box in my CJ2A. (I have rebuilt the steering box and just waiting for lube) I have seen multiple lubricant specifications from WW2 to the end of production from 80 weight oil to 140 weight oil to semi-fluid grease. The main concern seems to be to have a lubricant that will flow inside the gearbox and get to the bushings.

I was recommended to use NLGI 000 EP gear lube. It seems close to a 140 wt, maybe a little thicker. I have looked at using a 140 wt but that is not readily available, although Grainger sells it. The other option is a 85-140wt gear lube.

What lube is the best option? I have a quart of the NLGI 000 and the 85-140wt gear lube. Should I hold out and order the 140wt from Grainger or should I just use a 80wt.

I use the 85/140 in my steering box (and everything else that requires GL) haven't had any problems.

I use sae 140, i have a small leak at the sectorshaft  ( no drips )  but that indicates the bushings are well lubricated.  I check it twice a year
