My 3a needs a radiator. The top tank leaks in about 7 spots, it gets hot fast. And all the fins are hosed. Stock replacements are like $500, as you all know.

My 3A is not all original, (I have a 2a that is) While it has the stock motor and basic driveline (which will be staying, I love the little L heads) It has power steering and a lift and I am swapping to disc brakes and such.

Has anyone had any luck with an aftermarket aluminum radiator from some place like summit or Jegs? I ran one in a big block foxbody and it worked great. They are also ALOT cheaper than a stock type radiator.

I am really considering one, if I end up going that route, I'll be sure to post the install etc with part numbers. I just wanted to know what everyone thought.....

Was more looking for whether it will work correctly or not. Or if anyone has done such a swap. I worded it incorrectly.

Thanks

I don't see any reason it wouldn't work. If I was going to use it on the trails i would also look into a good electric fan setup too. (assuming you are already 12V.)

ECJ5 board might have more people with experience with aluminum radiators.....I'd ask there too.

In my Jalopy build thread, I posted up a link to an aluminum radiator from a mustang that has the same exact dimensions at the stock one. Let me see if I can find it.

I've been running mine and haven't had any problems with the V6. A highly recommended upgrade and pretty common mod.

Yes, Fbill is right, the ECJ5 board has lots of info on installing this radiator. Might want to do a search there.

I bought one off ebay from Champion for the YJ for around $160 with free shipping, it's worked great and is great quality. I called to ask about them and talked with the guy and he said he'd talk with the manufacturer about one for a CJ2a, and seemed to think it'd could be possible. The one I got for the 95 YJ bolted up perfect and I'm very pleased with the whole deal!

Here is the one I was looking at.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-380424/

How do you think it is for size? My jeep is 20 miles away, I only measured the radiator, not how much room there is.......

Thanks guys

I also found this one:

The nice thing about the one I posted is it has the same dimensions as stock and since your jeep is a 3A (assuming the radiator is grille mounted) it should bolt to the grille with some new holes.

Why aluminum?  it's third in line for heat disapation and a bitch to repair on the trail. All it is, is lighter.

 Then why is it a popular mod? If it wasn't a good idea, then nobody would be doing it. One nice thing about aluminum, it doesn't rot out. I haven't heard any complaints about it at the ECJ5 board...

Aluminum ones are cheap, and if I can't find one with the outlets in the right place, it can be tig welded and the outlets moved.

If I could find an OEM unit that would be the right size and outlet config for as cheap as an aluminum one, I would buy it...
