Ted,
first thing is look at the manual. It's here someplace ( sites gotten big in the last few years)
Then pop of the dust covers and remove the bearing retainer and bearing the outer will come out front and the rear will come out as you pull it off.

Yeah, original front 9" drum brake are a PITA. You have to take the whole spindle apart. It's a messy endeavor.

Take your time they are messy but a lot easier to remove than rear drums. Every spindle nut I ever encountered was chewed up from being installed and removed with a chisel. A cheap spindle nut socket is a good investment. But, sometimes the nut is so chewed up you can't use a socket. So, like Bubba, use a small chisel to back off the nut. Remember, there should be two nuts on each side with a tabbed washer in between. Read Vernco's site for a good overview.

The fronts are nothing compared to the rears (at least for me).
The rears were a nightmare. Had to buy a hub puller, use lots of heat and PB Blaster and stand/bounce on a 3 foot pry-bar before mine finally broke free. Then repeat the process on the other side. Do a search and read the threads on this forum before you tackle the rear. |

Don't leave home without one! Or, don't even try a rear hub without of these.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Hub-Puller-Brake-Drum-Remover-/380405196582?hash=item5891eaa726&item=380405196582&pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&vxp=mtr There are usually vintage ones on epay but they generally go for more than this one. This tip bears repeating: After you remove the spindle nut, put it back on loosely. Then when the hub lets go with a bang it won't take out your shin or worse. Also, be sure to thread on the three lug nuts snugly for an even pull. Once you have the puller snug by tapping the wing nut with a hammer, the tool is designed to give is a firm smack on the end of the screw. PB Blaster and patience help.
