I won an auction on eBay last night for my first civilian trailer! She is a BT3C that has been masquerading as a soldier, at this time that is all I know, I will be making the ~400mi round trip recovery tomorrow and will post more information when I can. I own several military trailers of various sizes that I tow behind my Deuce shop van (M109A3) and CUCV (M1009 and M1028) but I have been longing for a civi unit for a while so I jumped on this one. My intention is to restore it to the original color and repair any damage and missing parts but leave any PO modifications intact. My feeling is that mods are part of the item's history, and (hopefully) they were done for good reason, so I leave them alone. I will post more photos and the tag number when I get them.

CONGRATULATIONS on your recent purchase!!! I was wondering who took that fine specimen of trailer.  I was watching in it too and was wondering who won it.  Do you know what the original color was before past owner gave it that military look and feel?  Do you know the year and serial number on it?  That would be nice to know, you know.

I got her home with no issues, and she is nicer that I hoped for, especially considering that the guy I bought her from bought her from a construction company! There are three holes in the body that look like something was mounted there that have been filled with bondo and the tailgate needs some tweaking and the chains are gone, but otherwise there are no issues. The tail light is not wired up and is a military unit, and the tires are 600x16 but that stuff can be fixed easily enough. I think the original color was Forest Green, I can see it inside the stake pockets. I assume the hinges are not the originals due to the length? The data plate is off and the seller is looking for it so I don't have the ID number yet.

Looks like the PO tacked an old door hinge on the tailgate, proper size, weld on hinges are readily available (and they don't have screw holes in themLOL)

I started dis assembly and paint stripping today. I ran into some bondo but no rust yet. The original color appears to have been red, the underneath has been undercoated black. Getting the lug nuts off was a real stumper before I remembered the left hand thread on the left side, drrr. Other than the bondo, military tail light bracket, missing tail gate chains and the paint, this trailer appears to be pretty original! The construction company PPO (Previous Previous Owner) welded two braces under the front of the tub that will stay, partly because they are welded to the tongue arms (that explains the lack of bolts in them). More work in the future, stay tuned:)

I did some more stripping and priming today, found some bondo, silicone sealer on the seams (not sure what the thought process was behind THAT) and LOTS of little dents. I have decided to paint this trailer with a satin/semi gloss red paint to hide the dents, there are so  many of them I can't do the body work myself and it will have to wait for the day I can afford to pay someone to deal with them.

While trying to uncover the body number I found what appears to be undercoating sprayed over surface rust (dammit), don't know what I am going to do about that.

Some paint stripper dripped off the body and I found evidence that my springs and axle were painted red too, no surprise, but some have asked if they were black or body colored. I am going black this time around, maybe all red if I ever do a "frame off" resto in the future.

Sorry to tell you this but unless there are 4 tie downs ber side you will more than likely not find an ACM number. The early ones were left over WWII T3 tubs and once used up the numbers stopped appearing from the data I have gathered so far.

Poop, I missed that bit of info in my research! I was hoping that would help determine the age of my trailer since the PO has not found the original data plate yet.

Since I lack a garage to work in, or a hoist to hang it up or turn it over, I am still trying to decide what to do about the underneath. The undercoating will keep the rust from getting out of hand but it still bothers me that it is there...

If you can not turn it over yourself, get a friend to help, it should not be too much for two of you to roll it over then you can properly work on the bottom.
 
A quick look at production changes in your pictures and comparting them to the website I put you some where in the late 46 to 47 production run.
 
Rear shackles look to change to late at about 13XXX and you are before that but after 10466 maybe even 11XXX if I get some data on earlier serial numbers or 109XX numbers to narrow this down.

That does help, 46-47 narrows it down a bit, THANKS!

I will get some muscles to help me flip her over, I can't live with that rust under there. A wire wheel will make short work of all that.

I have the late shackles. If I am reading the database correctly the earliest on the list is 13668 purchased in 1947. Is there anything else I can look for to narrow it down? Besides the number plate that is...

Spring is here so I got off my butt and got back to work on my trailer. I straightened the right side with a hydraulic ram (mostly straight, it is bent UP as well as in...). I got a buddy to help me flip her over and started dis assembly. The receiver mod to the coupler casting will not allow the casting to come off without removing a tongue arm, the tongue arms are welded to a brace underneath, so that all had to go. I got a sanding disc on the underneath and found a mess. There is undercoating on top of a thin layer of rust on top of the original paint, dammit. I tried several methods of crap removal: chemical stripper, wire wheel and sanding disc and the sanding worked the best, but there is a problem. The round disc can not reach the corners and I can't get my grinder inside the channels to clean them out too. This current "restoration" is more of a temporary "freshen up" to make her prettier and to slow down the deterioration process, should I worry about the crap inside the channels? I don't have the funds to have her sand blasted right now, should I just give the inside areas a good coat of anti rust primer and paint and hope for the best?

The trailer looks great. If it were in NJ, it would be full of rust holes. You are doing a great job.
 
Its too bad there is nobody around you that has a sandblaster. It would make quick work of removing the paint. I sandblasted my rims with an old sandblaster I had, but never used. Once you get the hang of it, you can go really fast. And I used playsand from Home Depot, once I screened it to get rid of the bogger stuff, it worked great, and at 3 bucks for 40 pounds, it was cheap.

I do have a small blaster that I can use but I don't think it will get up into the books and crannies like an industrial one. I was trying to avoid making that kind of a mess but I will give it a whirl
