Anyone know where I can find a 6 volt winch? Light duty is fine as I want to to raise a plow.
Thanks, Sean

Back to the original question.

The Harbor freight winch has 50' of cable so with a snatch block the jeep would have to be within 25' max of an anchor point.

45 seconds rated pull, with 14 min cooldown.  It would be very easy to meet max rated pull with a few wraps of cable on the drum.

Line speed at rated pull is 6.1 ft/ min.  Based on the duty cycle, a hard pull gets you 4.5' in 45 seconds, they you have to wait 14 minutes.

If you think that's adequate, go for it.  You said you want to go with an economical winch because you'd only use it a few times a year, but it would suck badly to still be stranded those two or three times because you don't have enough winch.  If you get it be sure to carry a long length of chain because 50' is nothing when it comes to recovery.

Around 3 to 4 years, I bought the 2 year warranty but never used it as I haven't had a problem with it.

If I was to buy new wire I would go with one of the synthetic ropes.  the price has come down on them but they are still a few times the cost of the wire. But you don't have to worry about splinters or snapped cable. (which can kill you. ) if the Syn rope breaks it pretty much just falls down. and is very easy on the hands.

My M38a1 had been modified when I got it (my brother in law got it surplus with no engine and stuck a ford 289 in it)   He has converted it to 12v and ran it for 20 years, I got it in 85 and had to put a new engine it in and then daily drove it for 4 years.  Decent jeep none the less but with 302 V8 it was almost impossible to keep a drivetrain in it.   the front spring setup on them was the best riding of any of the jeep imho. (they had a factory shackle reversal.)

I sort of know where the old gal is and I really have to  push myself to not go save it and restore it totally.  But for now my restoration on my 1944 willys MB has taken all my jeepcash.

back on topic- if buying used unless the wire rope is perfect replace it.  it is not worth the hassle of getting wire splinters stuck in your hands for a  few bucks.

Did you leave it out in the elements or did you keep it covered most of the time outside??? Would you buy another one like it? What model is it or just ask for the 8,000 lbs. winch by Harbor freight? Many Thanks!!

For what your wanting a winch for, it sounds to me like the Harbor Freight Winch would be perfect as it has been for me. I use it a few times a year for the "oooppps" and it works perfectly, My Winch is the Road Shock but I think Harbor Freight replaced those with some newer ones, and I just looked at there web site and I guess online they don't have the 8,000lb anymore so you have to go with a 9,000 or 6,000. unless there is a store near you and maybe they have the 8,000lb one..

For me I just cover my Winch with a Canvas tarp and that is how it sits outside 356 days a year. here are some pictures of it..

Thanks Glenn, in my opinion the m38a1 was the best jeep ever made as they are so well built. I love driving it Big smile

Mount the solenoids pack under the hood if at all possible, and you can leave it out on the front.
Just spray the wire rope down with a light oil once in awhile so it will not rust or corrode.   I did run a cover on  the sami, then when I moved the winch to my Tracker I buried it in the grill so I didn't run the cover.  Just sprayed the wire rope with WD-40 or CRC  and always made sure to keep the wire neat on the spool.   That way the wire lasts and does not kink.
I would get a a HF winch again, and likely get the extended warranty. ( for their electrics is is cheap insurance.  and before the
expiration of the warranty bring your old unit in and get a new one. )

go to http://www.harborfreight.com/  it looks liek they just have 9K and 6K in this size now. I would go with the 9K (it is likely the same winch as the 8k.. Just relabeled. )
and look at the winches.  if you look around on the web or in car magazines you should be able to find a 20% off coupon. you can use it in a store or online to order it.

Oh and NICE M38a1 , 1943fordGPW.  I used to have one in days gone past.
