I have a Warn upright 8000# winch on my trail rig. I got stuck in the mud on a stump once. Lets just say the stump isn't there anymore.

I think as a general rule of thumb you should have winching power capacity to at least 2 1/2 times the weight of the vehicle. 8000 will be more than enough for a Willys. 6000 would also work. But more is always better right

I suspect you would be just fine with either, in a 2300lb(ish) vehicle. I have a Warn M8000 on my TJ (which probably weighs 3800-4000 pounds or so), and it does quite well. I've pulled myself, others, and large boulders with it. No problems. I don't play in the mud though, I play in the rocks. Rocks don't really suck you down, mud might create a suction that might require more pulling power. If that's the case, might as well just get an 8000lb winch. 8000 is a common winch strength.
Something to be aware of though, you don't get the full pulling rate unless you are on the last wrap of the winch. If you have two or 3 wraps while you are pulling (like if you only let out just a little bit of the line) then you aren't going to get the full pulling power. I don't know how much less, but it will be less. I've heard people say get a winch that can pull 1.5-2.0 times your loaded vehicle weight. For that rule of thumb, 6000 would probably be plenty for a little 2a.

If your buying an electric winch as I am going to do remember that the alternator and battery have to supply the current to the winch so a big winch will require a bigger battery and higher amp alternator.
I am going with a 5000 lb winch as of now. Tomorrow I plan to make a trip to Harbor Freight and pick one out. I have a single pulley block to double line it for more pulling force and long tow strap. I may get another tow strap.

I have a Warn 6000lb on my CJ2A and used fairly extensively. It has never failed to save the day.
On the other hand, my son has an upright Warn 8000lb on his CJ7. I would trade him in a hearbeat. Those things are fast! It would have to be with a synthetic line though, that winch with steel is too heavy for CJ2A, imho

My preference would be to start looking for a used Warn 8274. Even if it needed a rebuild (all parts available from Warn) and you spent $500-600 total, it will be a far better investment than any of the new chinese crap on the market.

I have the harbor fright 8,000lbs winch on my m38a1 and its a nice set up. Mine is there older version and I wish I could have traded it in for the newer ones as I think they are a little better, but I have not had any problems with mine and its saved the day a number of times. I also have there 3000lbs winch on my trailer to pull jeeps on if they don't run and it works very nice also. I imagine the warn winches are a lot nicer, but they are also about twice as much.. I don't get stuck to often so I decided to go with the cheaper one to save some money and its been worth it in my opinion.

I just purchased the Harbor Freight Badland Winch model 68144 and paid $200 plus tax, plus 1 year warranty $20. If you pull the full 5000 lb load the winch draws 296 amps. so that means to get the full benefit of the winch I will have to use battery cables to supply current to it. I will not use the frame for ground and will use two cables to the battery. The fact is my battery is 630 CA and my alternator is 30A so I will have to be careful if I start maxing out the full power of the winch to let the alt recharge the battery a few times.
I doubt many that put a winch on put a heavy enough power cable to power it. That will severely limit what you can get out of the winch and may cause damage to the motor. I hope that I never have to use the winch BUT, you never know. The problem with 4 whl drive and a winch is you start thinking your invincible and can go anywhere. The first time I took my Jeep in the wilds of Utah I got it stuck in a trench full of water with a steep slope. It took a Rubicon with a winch to pull me out and it drug the Rubicon 10 feet before my Jeep came off the ledge with a loud suction sound. The Jeep was glued to the slope in the mud. There was no way it would have gone forward and no way for him to get around me, he pulled from the rear. I intend to carry a walking stick to measure the depth of places like that next time. Of course crossing a wide stream you could run into a deep hole. It's impossible to plan for everything.

I like my vintage Belleview winch....
It just looks the part :) Pulls like a mule too! I have 95' of synthetic line on it and I could probably fit another 50-100 feet if I really wanted.

I'm under the impression that most winches come with the proper cables? My warn did, it came with some pretty fat cables, (2 gauge?)

Mine has the cable in the kit but I don't think they are big enough for nearly 300 A. I just looked on the internet and it looks like #2 wire will work. I'll see what the gauge is they sent with the winch. Since voltage drop is very important on 12v circuits and you should only have a 5% drop in battery voltage, wire size is important. OTOH, how many times would you have that hard of a pull?
If the cables are long enough I may just double them rather than buying bigger cable.
Most the time I have found the wiring supplied in kits is just marginal at best and when your only talking a few feet of cable why not get the max size you need. Voltage drop will increase the amp draw and may damage the battery and/or winch motor. I prefer overkill rather than underkill. I'm trying to finish a customer job right now so the winch job will happen next week. I'll have to make a heavy duty mount for the winch to keep from bending the bumper. I have a new bumper that is made for a Warn winch and I'll see if it may work for me. Edited by Carlsjeep - 17 Aug. 2012 at 10:02pm |
