My M38a1 had been modified when I got it (my brother in law got it surplus with no engine and stuck a ford 289 in it) He has converted it to 12v and ran it for 20 years, I got it in 85 and had to put a new engine it in and then daily drove it for 4 years. Decent jeep none the less but with 302 V8 it was almost impossible to keep a drivetrain in it. the front spring setup on them was the best riding of any of the jeep imho. (they had a factory shackle reversal.)
I sort of know where the old gal is and I really have to push myself to not go save it and restore it totally. But for now my restoration on my 1944 willys MB has taken all my jeepcash. back on topic- if buying used unless the wire rope is perfect replace it. it is not worth the hassle of getting wire splinters stuck in your hands for a few bucks.

If I was to buy new wire I would go with one of the synthetic ropes. the price has come down on them but they are still a few times the cost of the wire. But you don't have to worry about splinters or snapped cable. (which can kill you. ) if the Syn rope breaks it pretty much just falls down. and is very easy on the hands.
wire runs 70-150 for 100' see - http://www.summitracing.com/search/Product-Line/Ramsey-Replacement-Winch-Cables/

Around 3 to 4 years, I bought the 2 year warranty but never used it as I haven't had a problem with it.

Back to the original question.
The Harbor freight winch has 50' of cable so with a snatch block the jeep would have to be within 25' max of an anchor point. 45 seconds rated pull, with 14 min cooldown. It would be very easy to meet max rated pull with a few wraps of cable on the drum. Line speed at rated pull is 6.1 ft/ min. Based on the duty cycle, a hard pull gets you 4.5' in 45 seconds, they you have to wait 14 minutes. If you think that's adequate, go for it. You said you want to go with an economical winch because you'd only use it a few times a year, but it would suck badly to still be stranded those two or three times because you don't have enough winch. If you get it be sure to carry a long length of chain because 50' is nothing when it comes to recovery. |
