6V starters will function on 12V. They just won't last as long. Alternators are an aftermarket device. Does the alternator have an internal voltage regulator? Is your ignition system 6V or 12V (Coil, point, condenser)? How about the solenoid? Is the alternator belt tight? Do you have sufficient grounding/bonding?

it is a 12v battery, but I don't know if the starter and alternator are original. I'll be working on the starter in the next week and hopefully have it running by next weekend.

You can see from the earlier photos that the battery is 12 volt and an alternator and starter solenoid are present.

There are "left-hand" and "right-hand" bendix drives. CJ2A uses right-hand, that spring is left-hand. Follow the spring curl. Compare to the bendix drives shown above. Sean |

I've got a question for you all. Where exactly are the spacers supposed to go. Do they stay stuck on the pinion or are they installed behind the pinion to limit how far back it returns to rest.

I don't know where you are located but I would check the phone book for a local starter/generator rebuild shop. If not, somebody on this site might have the specific part or you could always pick up another starter. This would get you going and you could eventually rebuild the one you have. BTW, I don't have posting capabilities but sent some photos via Sean .... in the meantime WFBoyd posted a dandy which essentially makes mine obsolete (if indeed the starter is your problem).

This looks exactly like what happened to my starter a few months back. Fortunately I had a rebuilt starter in my shed so I swapped it out and was back on the road in no time. It took me about a half hour to swap out starters and I work pretty slow.

Take off the four bolts holding the mounting throat to the starter body and it should look something like the photo. See where my spring was broken? Don't know if your's is all there. Better look inside the bell housing for the rest. Really nothing major. |

Look at the last pic and you can see that somethings not right. Is the bushing gone also? looks like a off center wear pattern?
One more thing..The end of that shaft looks awful chewed up. Edited by GaryArf - 28 Nov. 2006 at 11:18pm |

Something about that starter bendix is not right. The gear retaining
collar & spring are missing. Almost looks like the center tube is
broke off where they should be:

Looks like a really nice jeep you'll be able to drive and work on at the same time after you get some basics fixed. I hotlinked all the pics for folks who haven't looked yet.

That engine appears fairly complete and not too badly messed up. I don't see the oil filter and of course that cupcake sitting on the carb isn't original; I prefer an original oil bath air filter. Heater hoses were noted, but don't recall seeing the heater. As said earlier, I like your new acquisition and think it has potential As far as the photos, enjoyed looking at them too but they didn't shed any new light on the situation ...... tip: should your problem be the starter take care in replacing it with the correct kind. I found out that the gear on my original mechanical foot starter wasn't compatible with the teeth on the ring gear. Got by with it for years that way but when renewing the engine I changed out the bull gear along with putting in a new compatible electrical foot starter.B

Engine pix. I pulled the starter and took some more pix. Hope this helps. Feel free to give any opinions or suggestions even if they don't have to do with this particular problem.
