This looks exactly like what happened to my starter a few months back. Fortunately I had a rebuilt starter in my shed so I swapped it out and was back on the road in no time. It took me about a half hour to swap out starters and I work pretty slow.

I don't know where you are located but I would check the phone book for a local starter/generator rebuild shop. If not, somebody on this site might have the specific part or you could always pick up another starter. This would get you going and you could eventually rebuild the one you have. BTW, I don't have posting capabilities but sent some photos via Sean .... in the meantime WFBoyd posted a dandy which essentially makes mine obsolete (if indeed the starter is your problem).

I've got a question for you all. Where exactly are the spacers supposed to go. Do they stay stuck on the pinion or are they installed behind the pinion to limit how far back it returns to rest.

There are "left-hand" and "right-hand" bendix drives. CJ2A uses right-hand, that spring is left-hand. Follow the spring curl. Compare to the bendix drives shown above. Sean |

You can see from the earlier photos that the battery is 12 volt and an alternator and starter solenoid are present.

it is a 12v battery, but I don't know if the starter and alternator are original. I'll be working on the starter in the next week and hopefully have it running by next weekend.

6V starters will function on 12V. They just won't last as long. Alternators are an aftermarket device. Does the alternator have an internal voltage regulator? Is your ignition system 6V or 12V (Coil, point, condenser)? How about the solenoid? Is the alternator belt tight? Do you have sufficient grounding/bonding?
