I have two different styles of handle and cable. I only know for sure which one went on Jeep #34692.
The one with the sleave and longer handle came off Jeep #34692
From the '49 parts list
HANDLE and RATCHET TUBE, emergency brake, assembly (Up to Ser. No. 183498) Part No. A-15150
HANDEL and RACHET TUBE, emergency brake assembly (after Ser. No. 183498) Part No. 646141
HANDLE, operating (Black) (up to Ser. No 44304) Part No. 639244
HANDLE, operating (Chrome) (After Ser. No. 44304) Part No. 643123
CABLE and CONDUIT, ratchet tube assembly (Up to Ser. No. 183498) Part No. 640353
CABLE and CONDUIT, ratchet tube, assembly (After Ser. No. 183498) Part No. 646142
The cable length for the sleeved style (from Jeep #34692) is 38 1/2" from the end of the ball to the inside of the nut on the turnbuckel yolk.
The length of the cable with the ball end is 42" from the center line of the ball to the inside of the nut on the turnbuckel yolk.

Gary: the longer handle with the pin is the same as on Mine #48777. The shorter one with the ball is the same as my M38 one. Also the cable goes past the passenger side of the transmission toward the brake lever(on the transfercase), and on th M38 it goes past the drivers side with a shorter brake lever. I'll have to take some picture's to confirm this.

Regarding "black" vs "chrome" handles
Part no. 639244 - HANDLE, operating (Black) (up to SN 44304) Photos from connomans #10371 "barn find". Most of the black paint is worn off, but still obvious when viewed from the right angle: And a clip from Tims recent 3-Stooges movie: Part no. 643123 - HANDLE, operating (Chrome) (After Ser. No. 44304) "Chrome" (maybe nickel plate) is mostly intact: Sean Edited by sean - 15 Aug. 2007 at 2:37am |

Tony my friend you need to post some pics! What do you make of this cable? did you find it on an VEC? Do you think this was a military? or just a heavy duty replacement?

The smaller ones I have found were located on the VEC and the larger ones on the later 47 48
I also notice a difference in the holding bracket itself...
And if I had any patients anymore I would learn to post pics..... naaaaa
