    Posted: 16 Apr. 2014 at 11:01pm
Hello all, I have a question regarding the engine mounting plate.  While inspecting parts for a rebuild, I noticed my newly purchased mounting plate has a slight curve on the end of the passenger side where the plate mounts to the motor mount.  I have seen several in the past that were bent for varying reasons; however, I can't recall if the plate is perfectly straight or has a slight bend on the passenger side end.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

The plate should be straight until it flares back 90 degrees to create the 'dog ear' mounting surface.

If it's too misshaped, it would move the back of the engine enough to cause trouble aligning the transmission and transfer case.

Gosh my memory is failing but I suspect you may the wrong mounting plate. I have encountered before and I think I remember if you slightly bend the passenger side you can make it work. Hope someone younger with better mind will chime in with information you require.

Mine was bent also. When I straightened it using a press the tight inside curve cracked the entire length of the bend and I welded it back. I have seen pictures of other mounting plates bent the same way and also wondered if it was correct.

Go to the data spreadsheet and slide across to the Head Casting column and click on the picture there. Look at the bend in the mounting plate. This is the way mine looked also. I held my plate down using a press and put a 15 inch Cresent wrench on the short ear and pulled up. That's how I cracked the inside tight bend.

Here is the spreadsheet link but I can't do a link to just the picture I am referring to.

Does this picture show enough for you to decide if yours is the same or not?

Thanks everyone for your responses.  My plate has the slight curvature before the 90 degree bend like the plate displayed in the first picture.  I will post pictures as soon as my camera is recharged.

I was putting new flat washers under the motor mount rubber blocks nuts and found one would not go on. I got a combination square and measured to center of holes on rubber block and one side was 1/16" longer to hole center. I rotated rubber block to match what I removed and it matched the mounting plate hole, which was not bent.   Forty plus years I hammer whacked the mounting plate to a position to match rubber block stud.

Could some one who has a rubber block measure from hole centers to each side to confirm. I kinda always thought the guy before me had whacked to match rubber block stud to get engine to set down. I have been thinking about this for awhile and just went to garage and raised the hood and when I seen the washer just on one side under the nut, I remembered what I did.

It has been fun and I hope I can remember that (lol).

My frame was bent slightly to the left beginning at the front spring pivot bolt mounts going forward. The original owner had had the engine out for a couple of rebuilds. I figured that he had bent the mounting plate in the direction that he did in order to get the hole in the ear to line up with the bolt on the passenger side engine mount. That is the only reason I could see for the mounting plate to be bent like that.

If you do try to straighten it watch for a crack in the weld where that generator mount bushing is welded to the mounting plate.
