So I just bought a 48 Cj2a...one owner!
Guy bought it new and worked it like a stolen mule on his farm in Ohio.
A few years ago he spent a bunch of money and had a restoration done to it.
New body, and mechanicals gone through...painted original picket gray.
My challenge comes in that the paint work was done half ass, the color might be similar but not perfect, the recovered seats are an unknown gray, and the wheels and tires are incorrect. A few years ago I restored a 2a (vec)to about as perfect as anyone could, an effort of love and history of these machines far more than a sane person would. (Try flatfenderwilly cj2a, or cj2a vec on google) I had to part with it to support my kids higher education goals, so here I am again. I want to make it nice, but not as nice as my last one that I was afraid to scratchor get dirty.
Delima is, it came gray. One owner kept it gray, and if I restore it to be just like the one owner bought it, I feel it would have the most value and interest. Problem comes in that I love red. And pasture green...or od...
But it wouldn't be purist accurate. My feelings are to keep it exactly like it came from the factory, and find a red od pasture green unit another day..........
Thoughts?

He put a new body on it.  It's no longer original.  Paint it the color you want and run it.

There's no paint code stamped or attached anywhere on the body so who would know (except a handful of experts) if you chose a color outside of the limited original offerings? One of my jeeps was black originally. Do I want a black jeep? No! Paint it whatever color makes you happy.

So if he fitted another engine but kept the original body would it be original?, if he converted it to 12v would it be original?.

I guess what I am getting at for all of us who went for a repop body because nothing else was available are our Jeeps now not original condition......still has original frame, engine, gearbox, axles, steering, column shift, but a new body......

I am a big fan of "its only original once", but where do you draw a line in the sand?????

Whats the next best thing to "original", "nicely restored"?,.....

Just keen to know what everyone thinks?

I guess I'm about 95% "purist", but maybe paint color falls in the other 5%. I don't see anything wrong in changing the color, especially if you use one of the originally available colors. Just don't paint it pink or teal and try to pass it off as originalWink.
My CJ2-A is a "family heirloom" jeep, but if I ever get around to painting it, it won't go back to the original Luzon Red, which I never was very fond of, or the Harvest Tan that someone in the family thought was better. I'm not too fond of that, either. It probably will be one of the other originally available colors. Or,,, maybe not, maybe something close,,, or,,,Big smile     BW
It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

Happy Trails! Good-bye, Good Luck, and May the Good Lord Take a Likin' to You!

Now that you told us it was grey originally, you are screwed! LOL Just kidding. I think as long as you paint it a solid color and not metallic, or candy, or pearl, it will look great. Nothing beats OD for hiding my quality of bodywork. Even runs and dents look good! Wink John

Well I really appreciate the thoughts. I suppose that I could now paint it how I want it and not be blasphemous in the other jeep purists eyes. Now just to keep that fine line of keeping it nice but not over done. If you can't drive it and enjoy it, a museum piece it becomes! Not why I bought it. No, never again will it pull a disc, but a light trail and put zing around the lake it must do well. Thank you all for your input. Glad to back in the ranks!

Do what makes you happy.  I had some similar feeling and still do about staying original, but I meter it against what my purpose for the jeep is, and what is feasible.

If someone says anything about the color say---well its for sale if it really bothers you (then give them a price roughly 4 times what you have in to it)

Its a willys afterall--not a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta---its meant for the masses to have a blast bombing across farm fields and two track roads. Paint it anything you want but pink--thats just wrong!!
If a man says something in the garage - and his wife can't hear him - is he still wrong???

Drive it often,in places where paint will rub off. Enjoy your jeep then repaint or not. The stories and memories of rubbing the paint off with your family and friends are more valuable than the Jeep will be
