Been a while since I posted anything. I've been busy with school and work, but in my spare time I've been working on a new buildup of my jeep. I bought Mike's frame, axles, transmission and transfer case as a starting point. currently the wheelbase is 86" (3" stretch front and back) and it is sitting on modified cj7 springs, widetrac axles (d30 front amc20 rear) with 3.73 gears. I'm using a ford t18 transmission, dana 300 transfer case and a dauntless 225v6 to make up the drivetrain. The plan is to run 33x10.5 bfg km2s but that might change depending on what I can find for used tires since this is a very low budget build. Ultimately I want to keep the old Cj look, but have a much more capable rig for the trails around here and something that can cruise on the main roads more easily. I'll get some more and better pics up this afternoon.

what axle shafts does the amc 20 have? the stock shafts were a really weak 2 piece set up, that should be upgraded to one piece moser shafts. also you might want to consider welding the axle tubes to the center section and putting on a truss do to weak tubes.

it would be narrower then the wide track axles he has. the amc 20s weak points are the two piece shafts and the tubes, as long as you won't be using it for extreme rock crawling and or a high horsepower engine it should be fine. or go the dana 44 route and either use the narrower axles or spacers, or get a 44 out of a scout or wagoneer and either use the wider axles or have them narrowed. another option for a rear would be a ford 9 inch out of a early bronco again either use the wider axle or narrow them. narrow track (early cj5) 50.5 wide track (late cj) 54.5 ford 9inch from bronco 58'' scout dana 44 58.5'' |

My goal is to find a wide track dana 44 out of an 86 cj7, but my budget is about $80 a week so the money is going towards more important things first. This is a fairly low hp build so it should be fine for the time being to keep the amc 20.

if you don't already have them i would still do 1 piece shafts the stock shafts are nothing more than scrap steel. if there is a cover and a big nut on the end of the shaft then they are stock 2 piece. i have found several complete axles for sale with them for under $200

The reason the AMC 20 axles strip is that they lose their initial torque. They have no keyway and the hub cuts its own spline in the axle.
Bottom line it will live alot longer if you make sure the axle nuts are properly torqued. |

Mine was in a V8 CJ5 and lasted 135,000 miles of abuse before it turned into a Flintstone car...
If that matters...

I'm not too worried because I beat on the stock axles with the v6, 5.38 gears and 32x11.5s tires. Nothing ever broke.

You can see in the second picture the current tire stick out. It's something like 1.5" Does anyone know the tire stick out laws in Mass?

I got the steering column mounted, had a bit of an interference issue with the shifter until I cut and shortened it.
I started working on the transmission tunnel using rod to get the basic shape made At full flex the tire has about 1" of clearance. I think these tires are 29" tall so a bit more cutting will be needed to fit 33s (I took about 5" out already, but it's just roughly cut)
