Well I am super excited to have made my first jeep purchase, a 1947 cj-2a!  It runs, transmissionseems smooth, 4x4 works.  So pretty happy with what I got (I will post pictures at the end of the week when I get it in the garage).  I want to do some restoring, nothing too big but want it to be a good runner.  I have no idea where to start, I saw some posts about what mechanics manual to use but wanted to see if there was a manual for dummies?  These are the three I am looking at now:

1955 AND EARILER WILLYS UNIVERSAL JEEP REPAIR SHOP & SERVICE MANUAL, Includes CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B, CJ-5

and

Service Manual for Universal Jeep Vehicles

or

Jeep CJ, 1945-70 (Chilton Total Car Care Series Manuals)

Any suggestions would be helpful, I want to start with completely redoing the fuel system, it has a metal gas tank inbetween the seats and I want to reinstall a new metal one in the proper place, then replace all fuel lines, overhaul carb and see how it goes.  looking forward to the adventure!

First, I want to put in new spark plugs (they are rusted so kinda worried about that) then do a full rebuild on carb.  I was looking at the Kaiser willys master kit, never done one before but looking foward to figuring it out!

Ben, I don't know if you are aware of it, but we have our own resident carb guru here, Scoutpilot, if you have any questions pm him, he is always glad to help out and he really knows carbs!

I bought a hard copy from a vender. Several have them for around 25.00. Maybe someone on here can post a link to down load one.

Ok need some advice, I pulled the manifolds (gasket was bad, leaked fuel from intake manifold I think) what else should I look at while I am at it? I was thinking of replacing the exhaust valve cover gasket, do I need to? Thanks in advance!

Not a bad idea, check your exhaust manifold for cracks they can be bad for that. Valve cover gasket is a good idea, now is the time to set you valves since it’s hard to tell when the last time it was done. Take your pcv system apart and clean it good, make sure all the parts are there, if yours has the pcv screen in the valve cover, take it out and set it aside, there was a service bulletin about removing them because they stop up and keep the pcv from working.

What is the pcv system? To adjust the valves how do I hand crank the engine without screwing anything up? Totally new to all of this and need my hand held!

Its the tube going from the valve cover to the intake manifold, like in this post by scoutpilot http://thecj2apage.com/forums/new-member-intro-and-questions_topic29742_post268037.html?KW=pcv+parts#268037

Just looked closer at your pictures, looks like you are missing all the parts for it and somebody has put a hose in its place.
