I have been looking for some thing that may not exist . Was their a rear centered 44 Dana differential made that would fit early Jeeps ? IF so what year? Did Scout make one that will fit a Willy's Flat fender with same width?

I am not exactly sure the range of years, but the centered diff from something like '72-'75 CJ-5 will bolt up to the springs. They are slightly wider, maybe 1.5" per side. These are desirable axles because of the strong flanged axle shafts.
Someone else can probably give better details, but I can confirm they do exist. :)

DJ series postal Jeeps in the '70s should have what your looking for, the DJs are based off the CJ5, the axle is about the same width BUT the newer the rear axle you get be prepared to move the axle pads inwards. The newer CJ5/Dj Jeeps started coming out with automatic trannies in the '70s and their frames are tapered out at the back, hence the spring pads sit farther out. I have a '78 AMC20 rear axle out of a CJ5 in my '47, had to move the pads in, no big deal for me. And i also did the one piece axle shaft swap too. People have said that the AMC20 with the one piece shaft swap is stronger than a 9" Ford rear end. The AMC20 has a 9.25" ring gear i believe.

Although the axle you seek is pretty easy to find, remember that if you still have a Dana 18 transfer case, the output for the Dana 18 is offset to the passenger side.
The rear axle pinion/yoke is more/less centered. This creates an awful angle for the rear driveshaft. You might consider using a Dana 20 transfer case, which would have the rear output almost inline with the rear differential pinion/yoke/ As mentioned, the centered 44 will be about 3" wider in total width. If you could find a flanged, offset Dana 44 from a 70/71 CJ, then you would have a true bolt in with the least amount of hassle, other than matching your current axle ratio. These 44's are hard to find. An AMC 20 out of a Qtrac CJ7 would also be offset and might be another option for you.

I just sold a '71 CJ5 rear axle with the offset and one piece flanged axles, but they are rare. As has been mentioned, the '72 - '75 is a centered D44 and the DJ's have that D44. I have a '74 rear D44 that is fairly beat that you would be welcome to, but getting from Pittsburgh to San Diego might be a bit of a hassle.

Do you know if this swap requires any driveshaft modification/yoke modification?

If your keeping the Jeep a 4x4 you would be better off to find a CJ5 that has the centre diff D44 and swap the CJ5 front axle in too (which is a bolt in), then you'll have matched gear ratios and bigger brakes too.

No modification for yoke or driveline. The axle tubes are slightly larger in diameter. New/wider u-bolts and enlarging of the holes in the spring plates will be necessary. The brake backing plate bolt pattern is different between tapered and flanged housings. Depending on your brake set-up, you might have to re-drill 2 holes on each backing plate.

Bummer flatfender47 you just set me back $40.00 I have that 70-71 Dana 44 and never thought to check the U-bolts I bought 5 years ago which are for my Original Dana 41. OH well least I'm not finding out some evening while I am trying to put the axles on the springs. Guess I add some U-Bolts to my wishlist. Least my rear braking plates came off the same Jeep.

I should also state they aren't flat/knurled at the top like OEM u-bolts.

That's OK not to worried about appearing stock and while I know the Knurling helps with twist. Since my axle housing is textured from the stock Knurling that should help LOL. Also the repop ones are smooth.
