I am installing my spider gears in my dana 30 carrier, the cross pin needs fairly hard love taps to drive into the carrier housing, is this normal?
carrier is oem dana, spiders and cross pin are from yukon.

If the Cross pin is aftermarket there's always the chance dimensions are a thousands or so off. I would call Yukon and ask them if this added resistance to fit is going to be a problem.

so from your response its safe to say the cross pin should freely slide in?
I have no base, my old carrier was cracked so when I disassembled it the pin naturally dropped out. suppose I have to wait to give them a call.

If its the same as a D25, it should fit tight. Use a brass drift to drive in to prevent mushrooming. Might be directional, I forget. There is nothing to keep it in if it were to fit loose.
