I'm just surprised they reverse engineered something that the original blueprints are available for...

I agree with you. It all depends on the company and it's quality control that is having their product made over there. I also have and am using parts made in China with good results. I remember the same thing about Japan in the 50 and 60's you could buy junk or quality. My best shooting rifle is a M78 Browning made in Japan and I am sure Browning had a lot to do with its quality. Don't get me wrong I would rather have items that are made in the USA if available and if it is fair and competitive cost. Jim |

When I rebuilt my 53 Ford Customline a lot of my parts were made in China, Idler arm less than 6 months old all rubber seals split and fell off. Supplied through Dennis Carpenter.

The quality out of China is getting better by the day, they are the "worlds" manufacturer because all of our goverments have encouraged our business's to set up over there.
No different from all that previously made in the USA stuff going to Mexico years ago, cheaper labor. I have Chinese made lathes, bandsaws and they are incredible value, all have done more than 10 years work and not missed a beat. The sleeves in my Jeep were made in India, if you ask you engine builder he may just confess to this. The material the sleeves are made from is superior to the original block on the L134 and I would imagine the same would apply to the new Chinese blocks better materials and with modern lubricants will last a very long time.......all you have to do now is admit to using one

Suspect many of us in the old Jeep fan club have suffered poor quality parts. Hoping this block will set a higher bar for aftermarket part manufacturers (especially one that I've personally been disappointed by on multiple purchases).

This really is an amazing feat for such a comparatively small market. Price goes down with quantity but I suspect this will be limited to only a few thousand really.
I know quality stuff can be made in China, after all, if their ships or airplanes were made with the same quality as say their mini bikes, ships would be sinking and planes falling out of the sky daily. |

That is a good question. Do you know where the blueprints are, or where they can be found?

Price dictates quality regardless where it's made. China can most likely match anyone, but when the market wants "Cheap" that's what they get..... Now if a foundry in Germany set up to produce these at a cost to consumer in the $4-$5K range, who would buy ?.

I'm not sure how the reverse engineering was done but it seems to me that using a 3D scanner would be easier than the original drawings because it would produce a 3D solid for CAD rather than having to build it yourself with 2D pencil drawings. All of the bores, surface distances, locations of the valve guides to the cam bores, what have you, are pretty easy to calculate IMO.
My gut feeling is that with the technology in metals we have since the 40s that these blocks would be significantly better than the originals. I say we all should get together and build one as a 2A page project. I'd contribute. We can demo it at the Spring Reunion and the Willys Picnic. |

The Chinese can build very good stuff now, if they want to. They have a pretty robust space program and may return to the moon before we do.
