4 carburetors were used on CJ2A over the years:
Group 12-04 -- Carburetor
p/n 640304:  Carter WO, type 596s  -  up to s/n 69589
p/n 643337:  Carter WO, type 636S  - after s/n 69589 up to s/n 212110
p/n 647744:  Carter WO, type 636SA - after s/n 212110
p/n unknown:  Carter WO, MB type, type unknown - rarely used when others were unavailable
The 596S would accommodate only King-Seeley and Monarch governors.  The 636S/SA worked with the Novi as well.

The 636S and 636SA are physically identical.  The only difference of note is the nozzle and retainer plug inside.

This is a 636.  S or SA unknown at this time (click for enlarged versions):

The throttle body casting number is "I-458".  This is the same on all 3 CJ carbs.

The base flange stamped number is "505" on a 636S/SA, and "458" on a 596S.  This is only visible with the carb removed from intake manifold.

The butterfly shaft link has 3 screw holes:
  • screw is placed in upper hole for use w/King-Seeley or Monarch  governors
  • screw is placed in middle hole for use w/out governor
  • screw is placed in lower hole for use w/Novi governor

The Model 596S is virtually identical to the 636.  The only functional difference is in the throttle linkages (thanks Mike G!):

The arrows point out the 2 different links, and the governor screw hole: remove screw for use w/King-Seeley or Monarch governor.

An MB carb has a distinctly different throttle linkage:

I have a stamped 636s carb with a throttle body casting similiar to what is shown. The difference being that mine is stamped 13 versus the 16 that is shown above.  Do you know what this # represents? It is shown in picture #5 above and to the right of I-458.

According to the mechanics manual published by Willys-Overland Motors, Copyright 1948, Carter Type 596S and Carter Type 636S is the carburetor for the CJ2A.  Keeping in mind this was copyrighted in '48 it makes sense that the 636SA was introduced after the printing of this manual.

Dennis: The Solex is an after-market change made by various Jeep owners for many reasons. I've got one on one of my Jeeps, and it runs great, but there are often problems with fuel pressure if the switch is made. A Solex requires a lower pressure, from what I understand, and some folks have had to install a pressure regulator to solve the problem. I don't have that on mine, but my fuel pump may well have a lower output pressure to begin with, since it's probably been changed out prior to my owning the Jeep.

That number is cast, not stamped, but I have no idea what it represents.  I have another that is cast "7".

Dennis:  there are lots of discussions about "other" carbs that can be used on CJ-2A.   Try a search, and/or post your questions over in the "Tech Q&A" section.

This is a 636sa that was in a box as a new one. I think it is more likely a rebuilt new one...Sean, for spotters guide purposes, What exactly is the difference in the 636s and sa models? Can we see it?measure it?

Nice Howard!  I'd have to say that's either an exceptionally well preserved NOS carb, or superbly restored.

Leaning more towards NOS - still has the ID tag which typically isn't reused on a rebuild, and throttle body not re-painted, still original black oxide, but degraded.

636S & 636SA changes are internal, so they can't be physically distinguished by external clues.  The only different parts are the nozzle, retainer plug & gasket.

Do you have the Carter Lists that distinguish these differences?
Or are you referring to the Willys Parts list by part number? It gets a little tedious to follow the CJ parts list for these carbs...
It would be cool to have the actual Carter Lists posted here for these carbs by Carter Model number....
This one actually came to me in a Sears box, probably 1970's vintage. I may still have the box....John, The Carb Shop, suggested a rebuilt on the one I show because of the use of aluminum plugs instead of brass. I do not know....
The triangular ID tags can be had...
Also, FWIW, there was a difference in the TPI count on one of the plugs also different compared to an earlier carb I have. And an aluminum one installed on this carb was the wrong TPI but forced into place into the threads on the body...Angry...minor damage only. But it suggests a reproduction or aftermarket part.
I have/had several WO carbs for comparison purposes and parts etc.
No worries.
Thanks.

Yeah.  It's been posted before, but they're lost in the ozone now!  Just put new links at the bottom of the original post

Quote ....John, The Carb Shop, suggested a rebuilt on the one I show because of the use of aluminum plugs instead of brass. I do not know....
Hmmm, I've been under the impression that Carter stopped using brass around the end of the war.

Regardless, if that's a "rebuild", someone went to great time & effort to get every little detail correct!  That's far beyond the typical rebuild.

Quote The triangular ID tags can be had...
Where?

What does your tag read?  I'm curious, cause I see no patent numbers on the bowl.  From what I understand, the Zenith manufactured carbs didn't include patent numbers, but the tags read "Z636S" or "636Z", can't recall offhand.

Thank You, Those Carter Drawings are exactly what I was looking for! Now added to my library too! I don't care for this ID tag...it is stamped 1942 as well as 636SA...that can't be correct.(?) Another suspicious clue as to originality...I think Ron has the ID tags in one of his plastic small parts boxes...I can not remember...but they are/were out there

I've got the same one, nos.  It came with the original sales receipt with a date of May 1977.

The carb looks like a rebuild because it has a steel adjusting screw instead of the original brass.
If I don't have it I will help find it.

Does anyone have a picture showing how to hook the throttle cable to the Carter 636 SA carburetor? Although it has the cable attachment clip on the upper part, it doesn't seems to have a place for the cable on the throttle arm like the 636S carbs does.

Thank you,

Fabricio
