Don't worry about it! glad you posted it. Once you add in having it bead blasted and clean out the 60 years of hardened caked in grease and a couple coats of paint mines a better deal. Sure I'd love to get $127 his last one but I'll be happy with the $50 starting bid! Hell I just pulled it out of the last parts jeep I had. |

Here are the photos of the earlier one that sold with a handle. Looks like an ordinary jack handle to me.

Low's photo of a handle is correct the other is just a common lug wrench. Think about it, why would a early Jeep jack lug wrench need a flattened out end to pop off hub caps?

I have both handles one flat and the other with a wedge for the hub caps that came with my jeep in 48. I have the jack also perfect working order. No one that I know have seen the type of hub caps that I have. I have even looked at swap meets. Yes they are jeep and they have jeep on them. A friend of mine saw them and told me never to let them go, he has been into jeeps since the mid 60's

Ed,
To Matt's comment, does your "wedge" handle have the same right angle bend that the non-wedge handle has? I thought that the more open bend in the eBay picture I posted also made that handle look like it was an ordinary jack handle. And is the overall length similar to the non-wedge version so that it fits easily through the tool box lid?

There appears to be a difference too, in the shape of the hole in the jack where the handle fits...in the pic that Sam posted, it appears to be a flattened opening that would fit the end of that handle, whereas the one that Low posted is round. That should be a clue.
Now the question becomes whether there was only one manufacturer/supplier for a pretty generic item? Do we know for certain that there was only ONE type/style of jack provided with a brand-new CJ2A Jeep out the door? There seem to be a large number of these things, all similar in general style, that are available through eBay and others, and they're not all exclusively for Jeeps. I suppose that I'm being argumentative here, but I'd bet that the lowest bidder got the contract for X-number of jacks, and if he could sell that same product to multiple vehicle manufacturers, his costs stayed low. If one of those other vehicles had hub caps, then his jack handle needed to be able to remove them, and it was no drawback if that same handle was used with his jack for a Jeep. I'd bet that there were various jacks provided with a new Jeep, and nobody ever had an "exclusive" to provide them to ONLY Willys. And I can't imagine that the part number would help us to sort this out, either. |

Well, like a lot of stuff on our 2As, the early production used parts from the MB. Down the road, some parts began to diverge. The main clue to those changes is in the Parts Lists when the composition of the number changes from the MB style A prefix to the wholly numeric Willys numbers.
It could easily be that the jacks on eBay were not really 2A jacks. I'm not near a parts list now so, someone who is could look up this jack, Jack.

After I bead blasted it I looked it over with a fine tooth comb looking for a stamp, mark or date. I didn't find a thing! most of the time I'll find some sort of mark or something! I'd bet they where a common style jack but are not that common now.

Well I was thinking about this and I typed in "vintage jack" into eBay and came up with a lot of large old heavy jacks for vintage cars. It got me thinking of the weight limit on WWII Jeeps and how light my Jeep jack really is. So maybe they did develop a light weight jack just for Jeeps during WWII and I'm sure they where cheap and surplus so it would make sense for Willys to just keep buying them from the manufacturer.
I also typed in "old Jack" into eBay and came up with this.

I also looked up the part # of the jack
A-1240 JACK, screw type
A-348 WRENCH, socket, wheel nut, 3/4" (Up to Serial No. 168642) (Use 645609)
645609 WRENCH, socket, wheel nut, 13/16" (After Serial No. 168642)
Seems Willys changed the size of the lug nuts too.

Well, at least there's not a left-side wrench and a right-side wrench!

I have never posted pics. but I guess there is a first time to try and I'll do that tomorrow. The first owner welded the two jack handles to gether to make a X and they both have the same bend. They both fit the jeep lugs.
