I have two to display and discuss here. The focus on these is the arm that comes off the knuckle case that goes to the tie rod end.
The first is the "early" stlye that came off the top of the king pin bearing.
The second is the rest of production that was cast into the housing itself.
The '45 parts list give this Part # A-822 Arm, Group No. 20-07
This is off Jeep Ser.# 10021
This pic is of the more common knuckle seen on all later Jeeps. I've looked in the '49 parts list and cannot find the # on this knuckle housing...Anyone? This is from Jeep # 34692.

I found the parts #'s, they were listed under steering? Seems like alot of things like this are crossover components.
One more thing about these knuckles... Sean pointed out in a recent post, the tie rods are differnet lengths between these two knuckle set-ups. The early tie rods are;
Early passanger side is 20"
Part No. 640181
Early driver side is 18 1/2"
Part No. 640177
The later style one peice Knuckle
Passenger - 18 3/4"
Part No. 642057
Driver side - 17 1/4"
Part No. 642056

Where is the date code on the axle? What does this number mean?
I'm trying to determine what month my jeep was made. Lowenuf told me the axle date is a pretty good indication of that

Jeff
Can't help you with that number. Possibly a casting part no. Here's a link to info on the axle date code.

My vehicle does not have a stamp like that:
Left side:
All I see is maybe an upside down "7"
Right Side:
I was very careful removing the crud as to not scratch or damage the stamping.
This is actually the rear axle. I could not find anything on the front either.

I looked at mine today, it has the early style too. It seems I have way to many early parts on my "48", side indents, early steering wheel, military oil filter housing, smooth head, etc. when did they stop making them with that style arm? |
