A friend sent me these pictures along with the descriptions. I thought you all might like to see them.
Photo #1 Marianas Islands, South Pacific, Saipan, July 10, 1944 Jeep driver Sgt. Lloyd L Johnson, 4th Marine Division, 24th
Regimental Combat Team, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Platoon in JASCO or Joint Assault
Signal Company, 5th Amphibious assigned to and with Navajo Code Talkers. Sgt.
Johnson could speak Navajo and knew the code. That's why Sgt. Johnson is
chauffeur and bodyguard driving the admirals and generals on a tour of Saipan
after 30 days of battle. In the back seat behind driver is Vice Admiral
Chester W Nimitz, 4 Star. Also in the back seat is General Howlin' Mad
Smith, 3 star general who was commander-in-chief to all Marine divisions in
theater. Up front next to Lloyd is the top admiral in the USN Pacific and
Atlantic, 5 Star Ernest J King, sharing one of his smokes with Sgt. Lloyd L
Johnson.
#2 Photo - same day and place With Howlin' Mad Smith holding carbine and pointing his finger. Next to him is Admiral Chester Nimitz. And in the front seat is Graves B Erskine, 2 Star General of the 3rd Marine Division. Note the carbine in gun rack and USMC ring on finger of Lloyd, the driver. |
