Topic: How to pronounce Willys Correctly Posted: 17 Nov. 2012 at 2:00pm |
John North Willys pronounced his name as "willis" instead of "willease" as many of us say it, so "willis" is the original and correct pronunciation. This topic has been discussed multiple times here. One such thread is so how do you say it... There are several others that you can find by searching.

I spoke to an 87-year old WWII veteran yesterday who corrected me when I said I own a Will-eeze. He said it is Willis. He's more than earned the right to correct me. I am going with "Willis".

I'm old enough to remember "Maverick" on TV in the 60s. Its chief advertiser was Willys. They even marketed a Maverick special station wagon.
I distinctly remember the commercials always said "willis". Wonder if any old ads are on youtube? Found an old video. Push past to 4:53 to see the jeeps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bf6qnM2pXY Edited by Jim Bow - 18 May 2013 at 11:38pm |

I have grown up with my Willys since day one - it's been in my family since new - we have always pronounced it "willeze" - will continue to do so because otherwise it just sounds wrong to us - my apologies to the Willys family - that is just the way it is for us!

I am locking this topic since I don't think it needs any more discussion.
