Hey all. New guy from Massachusetts. Just picked up a 47 Willys cj2a and brought it home. Plan on doing a build, not a restoration. I know, I know, but, I have done many a resto in my days and just enjoy jeeping. I plan to build a mild woods jeep, but wanted another flat fender. I have one when I was really young and have come and gone from many a CJ, YJ and TJ and now wanted another cj2a. So I will putting up pictures once a I resize them all. It won't let me download them because of file size, so that will get done when I have more time to sit. But my avatar is the jeep. Just wanted to wade in and say hey.

I have also purchased a CJ5 with a Dauntless in it. Its a complete jeep with another hardtop, so it will become one of the donors for this project. Really can't wait to get started and have that Odd Fire in there.

I think they are E78X15 and are Co-Op Crip Spurs. A hard tire to find. They still have the tabs on the tread, but I bought 9.50 X 34 super swampers. They will be for sale as soon as they come in. Thanks, I am looking forward to getting the Dauntless in there and getting the frame blasted and axles done. I have loc-right lockers in front and rear, but trying to decide if I want to put in my Dana 44 rear, that has a locker with the Dana 30 front. I might just do that, now that I have the Dauntless.

Ok, here it is after week one of taking it apart. Started fitting the new body parts together, no picture yet, nothings welded, just fitting the two cowls to the old firewall/dash piece that I cut off the old tub. Still have to remove the rear fender wells and supporting brackets. Then taking body panels to get sand blasted and on the jig to start welding. The motor is gone and the tranny/transfers coming off next. While I have it apart, I want to install power steering and a dual master cylinder for my disc brakes. Any suggestion on either of those????? Fire away, I'm all ears. Wink

Here is the donor for the Dauntless. A 1966 / 67 CJ5 with T86 and Dana 18 large whole transfer case. I would like to transfer the guts of the T90 into the 86 case. I have heard it done before, whats your thoughts on this and has anyone  here done this before? If I can swap the gears from one tranny to the other, I could use the complete driveline out of the CJ5 and install it into the CJ2a.  I was lucky to find a complete CJ5, this way I have the motor mounts, bell housing etc. I know it looks like a junk, but man was I happy to get it complete. It also has a PTO mounted to the T18. I really wanted a four speed, but this is the quickest way right now. It also comes with an offset Dana 44 rear, not sure yet if I will use it instead of the Dana 41. Does not seem worth the swap, as the 44 pretty much has all the same axles etc inside.

So what do you guys think about the plan so far?? Looking for any help I can get here. Thanks

Ok so this winter has been a butt kicker for me. The frame is still out in the snowbank and my trailer to pull the frame down to get sand blasted is out buried in my field. I have been real busy with the farm and have gotten no where with this build. I did pick up a second v6 with power steering pump and bracket. If enough snow melts this week andwe don't get more, I will tame the frame down this week. Then in the barn to paint. The only good thing about this winter is it gave me time to put together all the new body parts. Still wondering about the power steering parts and getting a rear facing exhaust manifold for the v6. Ideas??????

Several years back when I put a V6 in mine I had a muffler shop make a custom pipes and left it come out the front so it wouldn't  interfere with the steering shaft at the rear. There is not a lot of room for very many options.  I had headers on it first but got tired of them burning  and rusting out every year and put the manifolds back on and had the pipes made and they have been on it since the mid 1990s.

Two things to try for your manifold. Goodreaus jeep graveyard in bethel Maine might have one. 207-824-2807. I picked up a dauntless aluminum alternator bracket from him a couple of years ago but don't know if he is still in biz. Also check in with earlycj5.com those guys seem to switch to headers and maybe a want ad will find one for you.

Thanks guys. I have used headers all my life in one project or another. Like you said, they become the bad part of a good build. But also, sometimes you just need them to get you where you wanted to be. This is not that project. I want plain old cast iron. A lot of people say go with the rear dump on that side, to give you more room to install PS, like I want to do. It would seem that the forward dump will get it the way, but I guess, I will have to put in the box and shaft first to find out for sure. I just thought going to rear dump would make it a bit easier.

I have the saginaw  power steering in mine (now my sons') with no problem with it coming out the front.  If you want I could post  pic of it since it is in my garage from putting a new M38 body on it last fall.

A mod project....fun!

My suggestions....

Don't read either of these threads....

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/jeep-willys/1181265-my-little-mf-parts-due.html

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/jeep-willys/1000503-rango-1942-willys-mb.html

Mods....

-Completely box the frame, or build a new one.
-V6 pushed forward and up slightly
-Granny 4 speed transmission ( T18 or SM654 with the short adapter works well with the D18)
-Push the transmission and transfer case up in the chassis, basically till the rear output on the D18 almost hits the floor.
-D44 rear sounds ok, ditch the 2pc rear axles. Selectable locker
-D30 front is ok, Automatic locker, maybe alloy shafts down the road
-Disc brakes front and rear, I like sidekick/tracker stuff
-XJ pedal assembly on reinforced firewall.....boosted if you want or manual conversion
-Later model ( post-78ish ) big piston Saginaw steering box, metric fittings
-Astrovan power steering pressure line,
-Metric fitting on Saginaw P-pump
-Move the rear axle back about 1-2" for a 33-35" tire
-Move the front axle forward about 1.5-2.5" for a 33-35" tire, rear springs up front work well

I like the ultra low kinda thing.....but that's just me....

Have fun! See you on the trail hopefully!

Weewilly, did you buy a bracket go install the box or make your own? Metcaff, all those ideas sound great. I have disc up front now, off a renegade, I think. I've got lockrites in both front and rear right now, so I am going to stay away from the 44 for now. Too much to re gear right now. That may be next years project, axles I mean. I'm looking at 33-12.50 mud terrains, I picked up a T18 this winter and now have to mate it up to the motor. May just go with a new bellhousing instead of an adapter. Not sure if I can mod the dauntless bell to work or not. Thanks, all good ideas, keep them coming.

Do you have any pictures of your T18? If the T18 has the short input and the extra ears cast into the front you can mate it up to the buick bellhousing with a little work.
