the supersonic head is the high compression version I believe it had about .020 milled off it it changes your compression from about 6.4 to 1 to 7 to 1

You asked what's the real difference:
In my opinion th difference i that there is no negative as such. The idling is as good, the starting is as good. You do not need to change anything such as timing of spark etc.
So what is good?

The cool factor is above average, the standard head can be surfaced to the same specs with the same results, not really a Jeep head but a Kaiser Henry J head, do not pay extra for one unless you want the cool looking head , Yes you get a little more zip but not really worth the hassle.

Lee is it really so that the SS is just a machined cj 2a head? I thought it was a difference in the casting!

Supersonic head has extra ribbing between the spark plug openings which the standard head does not. Better for strength in my opinion.
