As a Jr. High librarian by trade, I always tell the kids in the library that there are no stupid questions. Of course, they then set about to prove me wrong, but that's for a different thread.
Is there a glossary of jeep terms out there somewhere for those of us that just recently caught this jeep disease? I have never before owned a jeep, or even a four wheel drive of any sort.
I have most recently been working on an old Chevy pickup, so I know SBC, AD (Advanced Design) TF (Task Force), Cameo, etc. Before that it was a VW Beetle, so some of this jeep stuff is very foreign to me.
What's the difference between a CJ, TJ, YJ, DJ etc? How about a postal jeep, a surrey, etc. And how to they correlate to the models listed in the Mechanic's Manual (My copy is a 1948) such as Models 48, 39, 4-40, 4-41, 463-2wd, 463-4wd, 663?
Why is Boyd's jeep named Lefty? What makes a Jeep a "lefty?"
I've been holding off asking these types of questions because I was hoping I could pick most of it up from context while reading the forum and therby not look like such a jeep jeep, but so far I haven't been able to.
I'm sure I'll come up with more rookie jeep questions as I continue to make my daily readings of this forum and gather pieces of old rusty metal that I hope someday when bolted together resembles a CJ2A.

Hi Stan
One question from the horses mouth answered for you. In April -May of 1948 Willys decided to mount the spare tire on the Left side of the CJ-2A rather than the right side as all the other ones are. They only did that for a short time span and produced about 10,000 of them that way. Hence the name Lefty. There is a definate serial number range these were produced through. Then they reconsidered and went back to the right mounted spare. Searching "lefty" will reveal some reasons for this experiment.
My interest stays with the 2As so though my manual is the 1948 edition also all those other models are irrelevant to me. My attention is drawn to the chapters and references to the 2a ignoring the other models listed. My brain only has so much room left. Others here are will be able to tell you all about the YJ, TJ, and all the other numbers you are curious about. Let your curiosity reign there's alot of knowledgeable folks here.

Don't feel bad about not knowing some of the terms. It takes us all a while to pick them up. And don't feel bad about asking, most people are so proud they finally figured it out themselves that they will be happy to enlighten you:) How is your build coming by the way?

I am an extreme Jeep rookie so those intials are really helpful. I have heard about that Patrick Foster book before. I am gonna have to pick it up really soon. Are there any really good technical books we Jeep Rookies need to know about???....Maybe we new guys can be called RJP for Rookie Jeep Person...just a thought.

RJP........ cool.
Maybe we need to get the webmaster to put our "rank" under our screen name that updates our
status after a certain number of posts like they do over on the "G". Something catchy intead of just "member".
Something like 1-100...... Rookie Jeeper
then 101-200................. Enough knowledge to be dangerous
then 201-300................. Know-it-all
etc...etc...etc.

"Enough knowledge to be dangerous."
Shoot, Mike. That's what it says on my business card and, often times, I feel that might be an overstatement.... |

Don't forget the FC Model (Forward Control). Did the older trucks and wagons have similar identifiers?

Don't forget the Jeep "Fleetvans" either (FJ3, FJ3A, FJ6, etc) see
http://www.offroaders.com/tech/jeep/Jeep-FJ.htm. Somebody in my town has a hotrodded FJ3 done up as a postal delivery van.
