I just bought a 1946 willys cj2a. I live in an area with tons of hills. My jeep runs great as long as I'm level, but when I go up steep hills it bogs down real bad. Any suggestions what I should try? Should I start going up hills in a lower gear? It is a 3 speed transmission.

Just back from SC. Frankly, my Willys performs better at your elevation than mine.
That said, I did have similar issues when I first got it. My problem was poor timing. I would suggest you double check your timing. If good, do a compression test -and/or- a leak down test. This will tell you if the engine is tired internally. Hawk |

I would make sure I was not loosing HP thru dragging breaks or something similar as a first step. Then check the vital signs under the hood. Compression, vacuum and timing will all effect overall HP.
These only have 60 hp when they are at their best and steep hills in high gear depends a lot on your deffinion of steep. What I have found is any thing under 90 pounds of compression will be noticeable when going up hill in high gear. |
