I am getting ready to replace the rear output seal on my transfer case. I would like to do it without ruining the seal. Can anyone provide some hints and insights on installing the seal. Thanks!

Use a socket large enough to contact the face of the seal outside of the rubber seal lip area. Smear a small amount of black RTV on the OD of the seal before installing. Clean the seal bore very well with brake cleaner so that the RTV can stick. If the output yoke has a slight groove, polish it with emory paper only in the circumferential direction. If it has a large groove, replace it or use a speedi sleeve.
Drain the T case before you start anything!

A scrap piece of PVC pipe (off appropriate diameter) and a dead blow hammer works pretty well for me.

You will discover there is room for two seals in the cavity. Many members including myself have placed two seals back to back to aid in preventing future leakage. Also, clean and apply some sealer on the splines prior to reinstalling the yoke.

Be careful on the two seal idea, that's what I did . The felt retaining ring hit the second seal and bound everything up. If you pop off that retaining ring it will work fine.
I don't think the felt rings are available any more anyway?

If you run the two-seal idea then you really don't need the felt ring too. I got a rebuild kit from Novak last spring and it included the felt rings. I use the felt with a single seal and am happy with it- no leaks.

The transfer case felt seals are available from QTM on Ebay.
Check out B-I-N listing 301730749370 He is charging a $buck each.
