I don't think we've ever touched on this subject.

Has anyone ever seen original windshield glass? Does it have any etched markings in the corner like that on MB's and GPW's?

I'll be having safety glass cut this weekend or next and would like to know.

Just went and looked and mine has no etching what so ever.
Only reason I think mine is original is the glass is cloudy on the edges about a quarter to a half an inch in from the outside frame in the laminate. Dont get that from newer glass, I could be wrong..

Seems like most old Willys have BB-gun "splats" on the windshield, all but one of mine did... some kind of identifying mark?  Bubba's kid marking his turf?Wink

My CJ2A and various military Jeeps have had the glass changed out. My 3A has the original glass - complete with bubbles around the edges, and a BB hole and crack - and it has laminated safety glass marked with the "Pan-Lam" trademark. Safety glass was invented in 1910 - and was a Federal requirement for windshields not too many years later. Our state law requires that the AS-1 designation is left on the cut replacement glass, in a corner position where it can be read. Don't know if this is a Federal law - but it might be.

My glass was original in my 1945 CJ when I got it, but it was cracked. There were identifying marks in the corner and I believe a date. I replaced the glass, so I can't confirm it, but I do have another W/S with glass on my '46 2A and another complete W/S with no cracked glass also from a '46. I will check on it for you.

I checked my '46 W/S';s this morning. One has no marks and the other has "Safety Play" and underneath that is "ASILX".
Don't know if that helps.

Here's a shot of my '48...on the passenger side. Driver's side doesn't appear to have the mark.

Sorry about the quality...it's tough to take a picture of glass!

I believe the original glass in my 48 had markings. Since the tie down broke while off roading once and it flopped on the hood and cracked both sides, I had it replaced.

Oh and just for anybody that wants to know, I had it done at a local glass shop for only $34. I was very pleased.

Well I think I'll just leave it blank. I can always have the correct markings etched later on.
