Your last sentence is probably the best. I've got a Solex on my '48 and as far as starting goes if you follow the directions on the instruction sheet to the letter it starts fine. Any deviation in that though and it's a 'hard starter'...Directions say for a cold start (this applies to anytime it hasn't been running, NOT air temp) pull the choke out fully for the start.My experience says don't give it ANY gas with the pedal and it will start right up followed by pushing the choke in about half or 3/4ths back in....Seems like the Solex is kind of a different animal as far as it's choke setup is concerned. I'm not sure, but this probably isn't the problem you're having as mine seems to idle o.k. with the choke all the way in or just barely out, was just trying to help with your starting situation.
