lack in steering wheel/whobble

all of a sudden, it does not take much at all for my '48 to get the death whobble (use to do it infrequently). I have 10 to 12 inches of slack/play in the steering wheel and therefore don't think my problem is the tie rod ends as so many people have told me.

Any suggestions. Thanks
