Temp gauge help

I just tried installing a new temp gauge I purchased from Krage's Motorsports for my CJ2A. I removed the electric sending unit that someone else had installed on the water pump and when I tried to re-install the new one it is too long to fit in the pump without running into what I am guessing is the impeller. Does the correct sending unit go on the water pump or do I install it else where.
