I need some advice! I can't get the distributor shaft lug seated in the oil pump with the hexagon shaped "friction spring" installed at the end of the distributor shaft. If I remove the spring, it installs no problem. When I removed the old distributor I noticed the old spring broke in two at the bottom of the distributor shaft hole (I fished these pieces out with a magnet). I then looked at an old worn out oil pump I had saved from an engine rebuild and measured the drive gear bore having a smaller diameter than this spring. Is this spring absolutely necessary or can I run without it? Thanks!
