Hello everyone!
I'm Erin Myers and this is our Jeep, Otie. I bought this a few months ago and waited to post here until I had a good assortment of pics to share and something worth reading.
Its surprisingly untouched with no real damage or modifications. I posted its details on the research database....http://cj-2a.com/parts_list/vehicle_detail.php?631

When I found it, it had no cylinder head, engine was stuck and cylinder 4 exhaust valve was bent/stuck. Those have been resolved through the usual methods.
The plan is to get this mechanically sound and preserve whats left of the original paint and patina.
Bear with me as I figure out the pic posting size thing.

EDIT Sept 7, 2018: time saver pics link here.....https://photos.app.goo.gl/U9ewHX6fXJvgdgZ96

Cool.
Okay so now that I've got the pic thing sorted, here's one unusual thing I found. This key really confused me at first. It wouldn't turn, pull out, push in when at the previous owners.
Looked under the dash and saw the keyed coil, but the weird key confounded.

Got it home and lubed it up with WD-40. I tried again and it rotated clockwise and came out to reveal this....

I have an idea why this is this way, but thought I'd see if anyone has ever seen this before. Keep in mind the PO says he bought it from an old farm if that serves as a clue.

Hey Erin,
Welcome aboard.

I love your jeep!

Looks like someone broke the key off and farm fixed it so it would work. I love that too!!

As you can see from my avitar, I like to keep the crusty rusty look myself.

Looking forward to your updates.

Thanks guys. To maintain that "look" I started wet dry sanding the crusty rust with 800 grit wet dry and white vinegar instead of water to carry the rust residue. Don't know if the vinegar part is a good idea or not but I figured the mild acid was better than water. Its working and smells like a pickle factory. Turns the rusty sections smooth brown like an old Kentucky rifle barrel.

What a great find!! I love the pinstripe on the rims.... Glass and seats looks good! I too like the crusty look, however, I like adding nice new shinny mechanical parts.. Maybe some nice chrome headlight bezels for a little sophistication? Smile Really cool, enjoy!!

I think you’re right on the farmer fix, but it’s done so well my thought was that it was a modified ‘fix’ and not a repair. Imagine your working the farm and don’t want to be bothered with taking the key out. It’s now a knob. Kind of like the military switch where you don’t have a key to lose.

I this is a Yale & Towne key. I found a blank for a spare on eBay. Have to get it cut but I don’t trust the shops I’ve visited so far.
If it helps anyone who needs a Yale & Towne Y9 key blank, eBay seller going-going-gone! has the blanks.

That's a beautiful JEEP. Found locally? Good for you to find one that is not turned to swiss cheese. Can't wait to see the results of you sanding with the vinegar. Sounds interesting.

My guess on the key mod is perhaps, something of an anti theft device. Just looks like a button and not an ignition key. I like it.

I'll be following along. Congrats and welcome aboard. Tons of great people here who are always to help and share their vast knowledge.

Erin,

Welcome!  Looking at the pictures you posted.  The Jeep looks like it could be earlier than 1946.  What is the serial number?  The windshield is from a early 1945 production.  Are the wheels vented or are they solid?  The front steering knuckles look early like 1945.  The rear axle look like it belongs on a 1946.

I am not an expert on the early CJ2As but some people on this page are.

Can you post a photo of a wheel, a few shots under the hood, and a photo of the interior dash.

Again welcome.

Stev

Thanks! It was local. The previous owner bought it about 15 years ago. The previous, previous owner (?!) had it in a building and I think parked it in 1966. Here's why i think that.

And here is a shot of vinegar sanded. Hard to see but it is smooth.

Thanks Stev. I think you're on the right track with the 45 parts. Wheels are solid which I read on this forum there was a run of those installed on the 18xxx serial number range.

I was reading the Willys service department bulletin #766 posted here i believe? which is pretty good evidence this Jeep was made in Early Feb 1946. http://www.thecj2apage.com/storage/Willys_bulletins-r14.zip

I hope someone who knows will lend some insight into age.
