So we all gather at the Daughter and son in laws house for dinner. Among the guests is my Bonus Grand Daughters (she came with her dad to the marriage) Boy Friend. He drives a Jeep Liberty. We have only seen each other a couple times and I don't think he thought I liked him (that is neither here nor there I had no opinion on him) So my son in law suggests he talk to me about Jeeps. He says you can always get grandpa to talk about jeeps.

So he says "you like jeeps? I drive one too" I said something in return then asked the bonus Grand daughter and him if they knew anything about their Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandfathers. They both looked at me puzzled and said well no.

I said that it the relationship my "Willys" has to your Liberty there have been 8 companies come and go between the Vehicle I am interested in and the one he drives. I Asked if his Jeep had a Cigg lighter? He wondered why. I said I think that could be the only part that your Jeep has that might fit mine. But alas no lighter.

He then asked me so what year is your Jeep ROFLMAO I said what part! Then I said for polite conversation I say the title says 1948.

We went back to watching some offroad Jeep thing on Amazon Prime and I invited him over to see my Willys when they have time.

Might have been an opportunity to reconnect the generations both in jeeps and people. Those millennials can be brought around to see that the old fart baby boomer might still be relevant and his Jeep is still a worthy ride.

Sadly, while I hope you are wrong, I think that you, Mr. Bullism, might be correct on your evaluation of the situation. Some folks will try to connect with us old farts more than once, but if we are grumpy with them the first time, many will not.

I have found, (especially with the current crop of "snowflakes"), that if they feel insulted, they will not put out any effort to connect again. Now if the young one is really into Jeeps, he may come on over in spite of the original reception. I, for one, hope so.

On a different subject, I also have a bonus granddaughter as well as a bonus grandson. I get great pleasure in having these extra kids in my life. They came with the younger boy's new wife. I also get to keep his & the first wife,s daughter. Plus, the new couple have had a boy together. Man, I am winning all over!

Now that's funny.

I used to have the same conversations when I was into the vintage Harley scene. The Mrs and I would be out and about and someone would inevitably want to chat. They would ask me what year my Softail was. Or maybe they would comment that it was an awful nice Dyna Glide. I used to get a bit indignant and correct them. It never led to good conversation (mostly because I was being a pr**k)

Then one day I decided to just say "thanks man, what ya riding today?" That led to some great conversations and some good laughs here and there.

Those young guys - they can be just as fun as us old farts! Give them a chance. LOL!!

If I didn't give, or return, every jeep wave from a JK I'd be considered elitish and snobbish...and I'm fairly certain I could die alone in most settings waiting to pass and wave to another flatty.  I don't wave TO liberties, but I do own one and will return a wave from one.  Life's too short.

Mark,

I was only teasing you with that comment. I did understand and was not offended.

At this point in my life it's sad to say that with the exception of my kids and grandkids, (and my dog) I would rather be with my Jeep friends than family.

I also have to look at the 8 legal entities that owned the Jeep brand, and the products they made a little differently. I've become too immersed in the history of the people that created the Jeeps themselves.

Just as a quick example, Barney Roos was the Chief Engineer then Vice President of Engineering at Willys until 1954. I have the letter of resignation that Kaiser sent him. No. I didn't get that backwards, they resigned him, he didn't resign. He was replaced by Ivan Schatzka, who remained in that position till 1982. I started in the industry about that time, and have had the privledge of working with many of the fine folks that designed the best, and the worst Jeep products. (I drove the first Liberty Mule through suburban Detroit, and the first WJ Grand Cherokee from Phoenix to Crown King Az.)

I have copies of the letters from Kaiser to Ed Cole at GM wanting to buy V8 engines for Jeeps, and later transmissions. The reply was basically that he would have to get 'Board of Directors Approval' for the sale of any GM or Subsidiary parts for use on anything but a pure GM car or truck. The result of that exercise was the alphabet soup we have today where the name badge has very little to do with the design or source of the components in the vehicle.

I seem to have digressed a bit from the original subject, but yes, I get it.
I've tried to learn to speak Millenial, but I'm waiting for Amazon to delivery my wireless language translator. If that ever happens, I'll change my screen name to "New Jeeps"

Good on ya, Mike...

I seem to get most of my waves from Harley owners. Since I use Ol' Red as an almost daily driver in a small town in all kinds of weather, people are used to seeing me on a somewhat regular basis. Without a top on Ol' Red, I guess both I and the Harley owners are rain-adverse. In the winter I only see the very hard-core Harley owners but I will guarantee that if I see one out in the winter I will wave because I know that we both have something in common...we are both freezing our ass off.

I like getting waves from the HD crowd, usually happens when I have the windshield down.  They "get it"... as well as damn near every other classic car I pass.

It may manifest itself differently, but it's just a different strain of the same virus LOL

My good friend was one of the vehicle development engineers that developed the Liberty, as well as the TJ and Grand Cherokee. He has some great stories. These might not be completely accurate, but they are close.
They put an early prototype together and took it down the street from the Jeep Truck Engineering Building where there was a huge ditch. If you hit the ditch going about 20 mph, you would jump out the other side about 5 feet off the ground. The did it until a part broke and put the part on the responsible engineer's desk and told them to fix it. They did this for a few months until nothing broke.
They were out in NV and were running up Davis dam pulling weighted trailers with trucks and Jeeps. They had a 35 foot tag-along that weighed 12,000 lbs they were pulling with a Cummins 1 ton truck when they blew the trans. They hooked up the diesel Liberty to the trailer and hauled it up the hill with that, and then went back and pulled the truck up with it.
He is very old school but really grew to love that little Liberty.

Seems like it may have been easier to print "don't jump five feet high" in the ownwers manual LOL
