SO I have a Signal Stat 800 turn signal switch which has an indicator bulb on the end of the lever. It also has the ability to operate as a 4 way flasher (using a 2 prong flasher) I have std 1157 bulbs in my Tail/Turn/Brake lights in the rear and special small two element bulbs in my vintage truck clearance lights that I use for my front Park lights to handle Park and Turn. I also have 4) small LED lights that will act as clearance lights 2) in the ends of my Fog Light mounting bar in front of the grill and 2) in the ends of my Rear Cross member which is now a 2" x 3" rectangular tube. I want my Park lights to stay on when my headlights come on. I want my 4) clearance lights to come on with my tail lights and to flash with my turn signals and 4 ways. I want the Tail and Brake lights to operate normally. And looking at the vintage instructions available for the Signal Stat 800 and what I have I been going nuts. SO since I have duplicates or access to all the lights and switches involved I am going to string it all out on a sheet of plywood and using the bundle of 30) jump wires I just ordered from AMAZON with alligator clips on their ends. I'm going to wire the whole mess up and do some testing. Before I try to work it into CHUG. I have a real nice Little Jump Starter battery to power everything while I figure it out. Anyone else ever resort to this level of testing prior to hard wiring?

I've never done that kind of testing, but maybe I can help you out with some of the rest:
"I want my Park lights to stay on when my headlights come on." Easy enough - connect them to the tail-light circuit. "I want my 4) clearance lights to come on with my tail lights and to flash with my turn signals and 4 ways." Connect the "hot" side to the tail-light circuit, and the ground side to the "hot" side of the individual front (LF, RF,) turn signal elements. The clearance lights will ground thru the turn signal elements but will not pass enough current to light the turn signal light. When the T/S light is turned on it will supply voltage to the ground side of the clearance light and with voltage on both sides the clearance light will go out. If you ground the rear clearance lights through the LR and RR turn signal elements, the brake lights will turn them off. "I want the Tail and Brake lights to operate normally." No problem. BW

Ive mainly done minor wiring jobs, key switches, alternators, starters etc and several years ago I wired up an old Chevelle I had with a painless harness, so I don’t have much experience. I really like your idea. It is very good, especially if you’re adding other features and components that your factory wiring system doesn’t have. You’ll be able to get all the specifics figured out and work out any issues beforehand, and in theory when you hardwire to the Jeep it should be just a matter of routing and securing the harness. The rest should be just plug and play pretty much.
Awesome idea!

Thanks those will be helpful I already have the 4 page instruction sheet. I think my problem is trying to figure out how to add lamps to the system. And to get the front lights (which are now dual element to operate as a dim Park and Bright Flash. The jumper wires I ordered will be here tomorrow so this weekend I can play mad electrical scientist and figure out if I can have what I want or not.

This reminds me of a special tool one of my buddies thought up for wiring jobs.
Some older cars had seat belt buzzers, I think the one he used probably came from an older VW. He has this buzzer wired up with alligator clips so it goes off when the other end of the wire is connected to the juice.
This is a very handy thing when working alone, especially when wiring up things that come on at the opposite end of the vehicle. |

Mark,
So the signal stat has driven you knuts ! hahaha I've been going knuts, and haven't even been near wiring. omg, you're not alone. Bruce lost me when he began explaining reversing the ground and positive leads. I am not much of an electrician so I would be LOST. Take lots of breaks to reduce stress and stay near to the warming fire. Like Oldpappy mentioned, I do use one of those buzzers for when I can't see what I am working with. It has proven to be very handy when working solo. Before you know it, you'll be lit-up like Las Vegas !! |
