    Posted: 23 Mar. 2019 at 11:31am
So I freshly rebuilt My transmission and at the same wanted to convert over to a top shift for a while.  *No column shift parts were damaged in the conversion and all were saved.  I plan on converting back when i have the time and space to do a full resto from the frame up.

Onto the issue.   I can shift into all gears when the bolts are loosed holding the shift tower to the T90 case, but as soon as I tighten the bolts down to seat the tower I am having binding issues.   I can shift it into first gear, with more force than i would expect to need, but not "yarding" on the shift by any means, but once in first i cannot shift it back to neautral or reverse at all.  I have to pull the tower off to get things back to neutral.

Transmission turns by hand, 1st/Rev.  slides by hand without the tower.

Could the shift fork be too long?  anyone ever run into this before?

Did you use a gasket under the shift tower? Try adding a second gasket if you did..

Maybe the problem is in the shift tower itself. Have you shifted the tower while not on the trans? Maybe you have a detent problem with the shift rails.

I did not put a gasket in yet, i was testing it all out before doing to final assembly.

As far as the tower goes, i can shift it when it is off the tower.  I did not rebuild it at all though.  I was thinking that  was going to be my next step.

Thanks for the ideas.

Be sure the shift forks are fitting into the collar grooves, its easy to miss them when installing the tower.

Another thought. Do you have another shift tower that you can try?

Nope, I don't have another tower to try.  I picked the one I have up on Ebay and it is in good shape, so I am slightly puzzled.

I will double check the forks.   Since I could shift into first no problem i thought they were in the collar, but it wont hurt to check.

Sounds like it could just be a matter of clearance. Maybe try bolting the tower on with shims between the tower and the top of the transmission case. Tighten it down, if it doesn't shift loosen the bolts and try a slightly thicker shim. If you find the spot it will shift install a gasket of that thickness (providing the gap is not excessive). It's quick and easy to try before you rebuild the shift tower.

I am going to give this a shot.  I was hoping someone on here might have experienced this before, however I will report back once I get a chance to give this a try.

Just wanted to give an update, progress is slow at the moment because I am trying to remodel a house so that my family and I can move out of our current apartment.

Last night I put 1/4 inch of gasket material and am still getting some binding shifting 1st/reverse.  I have no problem with 2nd/3rd.  I am going to try putting in another 1/16th of gasket material and see if that alleviates the problem.

If so I am going to put gasket maker between each layer and sandwich them together and do the final install.

This seems excessive to me but maybe the case was machined down in its previous life, who knows.

Is the 1st/rev shift fork loose on the rail? if so, maybe it tips when your try and shift and that is causing the gear to try an tip on the main shaft and possibly bind. Does your main shaft have a slight burr or worn step causing it to hang up? I could see either scenario or the combination of them is causing your problem.

Seems to me something is not right with your shift tower.  You said you bought it off ebay.  Maybe its not compatible with your T90, maybe from a much later model.  I think I have an extra shift tower. If you want to try it, I'll send it to you just for the postage.

I have no idea what it takes to convert from side shift to top shift.  Could there be any remaining side shift parts inside that are interfering with the top shift?

Joe:  The shift fork seems tight and the main shaft + 1st/reverse are new with the rebuild.

ndnchf:  I am thinking the same thing, the tower has t90 stamped into it, but I dont know what year its from unfortunately.

If you have one you would be willing to part with, that would be fantastic, I will send you a PM right after this.

I don't think there is anything in there causeing a problem because everything slides easily without the tower on it.  Its only when I tighten the tower down.

SpringerKing,

Looks like lots of good ideas - Joe suggested checking the scenarios which is what I would suggest also. If one is stuck it could cause a problem like you are experiencing. They should move freely if they are stuck against the ramp it can be impossible to shift.

Having to shim out 5/16" would be excessive.

Is is possible that the 1st/Reverse shift fork was installed backwards on the rail?

Edit:  Upon further review, I don't think you can install 1st/Reverse backwards.  Embarrassed  You can install 2nd/3rd backwards.

Could the fork be bent?

I thought that would be excessive too...  I will take the assembly back off tonight and take a close look at it.

This may be a dumb question, but could the forks have been reversed where the 1st/revsere fork is in the 2nd/3rd spot and vice versa?

Can you post good clear photos of the trans and shift tower?

Good thought, but no.  Different fork diameters/sizes.
