    Posted: 13 Nov. 2008 at 12:56am

I'd like to document all of the canvas panels for CJ2A soft top.  Dimensions, materials, buckles ........ well ... EVERYTHING!  Eventually I will document ALL of the canvas parts as closely as I can.  Del has everything but the two roof canvas pieces.

Herei s a link to a previous post where we had some discussion on materials:

First, I have started documenting the rear panel

here is a link to all the pictures that i took of Del's rear panel canvas at JC.

Here is a dimensional drawing:
Subject to revision

If anyone has any input on the rear panel, material, buckles, straps whatever,  Please join in.

Edit:  Oh... lets talk about the binding too.

A few features about this piece:
The canvas measures .037 thick with a micrometer:
As shown on the drawing it is 2 ply around the edges.  The bottom has a ply that is 6 inches tall:
The rest of the outside has a 2" wide ply:

These pieces are sewn on the inside of the panel.  The binding is 3/8" wide.

The drawing shows the dimensions of the seams.

There is no stitching around the windows:

I am interested in ALL the data you have.

Do you have canvas, data or both?
Do you have any information on the roof pieces?
How thick was the material of your original canvas top?
How thick was the material that you used to make your half top?
Where did you get the material?

?????????????????????????????????????

No problem.  Hope you don't mind if I get started though.

Roger's canvas hangs over the top of the tub approximately 1-1/2 inches.

Having this information, and knowing that the bows are 31-3/4" above the top of the tub,

And using a colaboration of dimensions from Sean's canvas, Rogers canvas, And the dimensions from Del's rear panel,

uploads/1479/Rear_roof_canvas_back_panel.pdf
(subject to revision of course)

I have enough information to make a preliminary drawing of the rear panel that is sewed to the rear roof canvas.

I was able to calculate that there is a 2" 2 ply strip around the arched opening in this panel.  I am sure that the two wing pieces are 2 ply or at least where the C/S fasteners are but I will need to see more detailed photos to finish this documentation.

No hurry.  I have plenty of pieces to document.

Jeff,

I will try to find some time during this weekend to measure what ever you want of the canvas. (I work today, Saturday)
PM me with what specific parts you need first.
I will do my utmost to help you in this since you have done so much for the CJ2A community.

By the way, why don´t you take a trip over to Sweden and check te canvas "LIVE"Wink
You are very welcome to live at my place!

Roger,

Don't worry about it. I want this project to be FUN. I don't want it to be a burden. I will ask you for some information from time to time. Please don't feel that you have to run to the garage and get it for me every time. Like I said, I have PLENTY of data already that I have to document.

You, and Sean, have done just as much for the community. I am greatful for what I have learned from you.

I have never been to Sweden, but I do go to Europe from time to time. I will definitely stop by.

Made a few revisions to the Rear roof canvas drawing:

Basically what I did was revise the wing panels on each end of the main rear panel.  Originally I had the wing sewn on the outside of the panel but it looks to me by Roger's pictures that there is a second ply sewn on the inside of the panel.  The picture is not clear enough to see where the stitch lines are.

Jeff:

I presume you're doing all this for reproduction purposes?  If so, there are construction details that should be documented as well: seam type, stitch type & size, weave orientation, etc.  I'll be looking out for those details as I get around to my canvas.

In your latest drawing, you outlined the flap opening reinforcement in blue as a "seam".  It's not really a seam, just a stitch line, showing through as do the stitches for the side flap reinforcement.

And there's 2 more to add.  The tie-down straps have triangular reinforcing gussets on the inside.

I'll try & dig some of it out today.

Sean

Sean,

Yes eventually I would want to do an accurate reproduction so I am interested in all the details.
Yes the correct word would be "stitch" and NOT seam.

Thanks!

Edit: I would also like to use the information to compare to the current reproductions being made

Are you planning to do your own sewing on this top or are you thinking that an upholstery shop is going to take all your data and produce it?  .....  just wondering
