Mike, by mid-June the road up Mt. Princeton should be open and passable. The last place that opens is the avalanche chute. We can see it clearly from TDR so we'll know when the top opens up. Usually it's open by Memorial Day, but with this year's snow, it could be a bit later.

Chicodave, welcome to the CJ2Apage! And welcome to the Fall Color Tour thread. Yup, sorry you missed the lottery for this year's event, but you'll be able to put in for next year. If you haven't done it yet, I recommend that you read through the threads for the last year or two and you'll see what it's all about.

Mike, I'm very happy I made the cut and thank you Sir for hosting your most excellent bucket list event again! This year I'm NOT bringing the teardrop. We left Ohio for Oregon last winter and so splurged on an enclosed cargo hauler to move household stuff - now it's a cushy jeep trailer and future hopefully cushy full-scale camper too. The missus Tammy is now agreeable about joining in! :) Now I have to behave at FCT. :(
Life is GOOD!

Alan, Goodonya for upscaling your trailer! I think you'll find that Carhauler camping can be quite comfortable. I know Nancy sure enjoys our carhauler. Too bad about having to behave. I've always counted on you as being one of the "Wild Men!" But now Tammy will be able to see why you enjoy your week at TDR so much. I'm curious to know what size trailer you have, and what changes you are making to it to make it into a camper/toy hauler. After 7 years of using mine, I'm still making improvements to it. This year I changed out the heater, and I'm adding cabinets and a counter. In the cabinets I've got a file cabinet, our water barrel, and a fridge, all built in. I also put in a ceiling of plywood to eliminate the cold chill from the steel roof. I'm looking forward to talking trailer mods with you, and sharing the mods I've made to ours.

Say Mike, did you get any of this snow today (May 20th)? I've got a couple inches on the ground here in Colorado Springs in the last few hours and I was wondering if it hit you first.

The little bit of snow we got here at TDR melted on contact, so no accumulation. Most of what we got was rain. And we're glad for it. The mountains are really getting the white stuff. Another 1-3 feet up high. Some of our Jeep trails may not open up until July this year. The snow drifts and snow banks in the shadows will take a long time to melt. And places where avalanches came down across roads will take a really long time to melt away. I know that the avalanche that crossed the Tin Cup Pass road just above Mirror Lake left over 20 feet of snow and ice and trees and rocks on the road. I'm concerned that it may not be opened before FCT. So for everyone who's enjoying a bar-b-que this Memorial Day Weekend, wearing shorts and a t-shirt, your favorite high-country Jeep trails are perhaps a month or more from loosing the snow that's blocking them. Think about that as you sweat, and swat mosquitoes. That's life in the high Rockies.
And while you're enjoying that bar-b-que, remember to thank those service men and women who have given their lives so you can enjoy the freedoms and comforts of our country. And if you think of it, thank the living Veterans and Service people you know for continuing the tradition of service to our country. A "Thank You" just takes a moment of your time, and your Veteran and Service friends will appreciate it.

With all the crazy weather we might have snow in September. Now that would be cool! Saw where there was light hail at the TDR. Hope no damage to any property.

Yes we got a couple inches of hail, and lots of rain. TDR isn't so thirsty now. Fortunately at this elevation we don't get the huge hailstones like they do in the big cities of the front range. We get pea sized hail stones so not much damage done. Might have knocked a few flowers down. But I did discover a leak under one of my solar panels. It was dripping on my plywood stockpile inside the shop. I covered the wood with a tarp, and will call the solar company once we get to business hours. I will not accept a leak in my shop roof.
On another note, I've come up with an idea for a short driving course on TDR that will help make the point about not using the brakes or the clutch when driving downhill or uphill on really steep grades.

An obstacle course at the TDR! ALRIGHT..... Last year Mike taught me a good lesson when we were coming down from the parking spot on Mt. Princeton. Let the engine do the work for you and stay off the brake and clutch. That is just one of the lessons and 4 WD driving skills that I have gained from the FCT. Its not just about the great trails, pretty leaves, pretty ladies, and tough, rugged, manly men...….wait a minute I got a little distracted from the subject. Seriously, the lessons we learn make us better off road drivers thanks to friends!

The last time I drove Ol' Unreliable to the FCT (2016), I drove home on that Friday night through a rainy snowstorm on Trout Creek Pass. I could live without that. You can never rule snow out in the high country, though. Not even in August.
