I used to have a dauntless in CJ5 and was very peppy. It also idled really well and would pull okay from idle. I'm building a Kubota swap now, but haven't even started the engine. The couple of folks making conversions, Kubota Swappers and Greg at Overland Diesel have things pretty well figured out, but to use their kits you will need to cut off the stock motor mounts and weld to the frame - not real easy to reverse. The VW TDI swap sounds cool, but Seth (Millennium falcon) has awesome fabricating skills. I would bet it would take mere mortals a good bit more effort to finish the TDI.

I am a little worried about the idle issue with Kubota. I have a Kubota tractor and it can shake your fillings loose at low idle. I intend to do almost exclusively off-road driving with this thing, and going slow is king. So basically, I'll can tell you in a year or two if the Kubota is good!

And two of them actually run!

The Go-Devil in Ol' Unreliable has always seemed fairly peppy to me--for a flathead 4-banger.  That is, for around-town driving.  The 1-2 shift causes a bit of slowdown, but it's still a fun drive......when it runs....  Smile
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable

I will never take the jeep on the highway, and it is unlikely that I will rock craw at all with it.

I think your safe putting whatever you like in it.....

That's the bottom line. Its your jeep, enjoy it as you see fit.

I will say that I've seen MF's TDI conversion with my own eyes, very closely too. I've also followed him on the road (I could barely keep up). It is an awesome and very clean conversion. If he offered to do the conversion, I'd be in line at his doorBig smile That's the only downside, its a custom fabrication job.
1948 CJ2A - It goes nowhere fast, but anywhere slow.

+2 If MF starts doing TDI conversions, I'll find another Jeep and get in line too!

I have had V6 Jeeps and they are great. I just wanted to do something different and the kit was available for the Kubota from Overland Diesel. I am very pleased with my conversion. I mostly drive my Jeep around town and the Kubota pulls the hills better than my old L head did.

Could you expand your description of the driving differences between the 134 and the Kubota?

My L head was kind of tired but it still ran pretty well....I have a large hill near my house...I had to gear down to second gear just to pull up the hill at all....with the Kubota, I can pull the hill in 3rd gear.

I was never able to keep up with traffic around town with the L head but with the Kubota, that is no longer an issue. It has more torque and is just a better driving experience. I cannot comment about off road since I have never taken it off road since the conversion but I have no doubts that it would perform well.

One thing that I resolved with the diesel conversion was the annoying boiling of fuel from the carb during the summer when you would drive and then park for a while. It was always a bear to get started again...not so with the diesel. I have a glow plug circuit in the Jeep with a manual switch but I have NEVER used it as the thing seems to fire up with a half a spin of the starter...hot or cold. Like I said, the Jeep is much more fun to drive now...at least for me. :)

Another thing that I like is that other than the sound, people do not know that I have a different engine in the Jeep. It looks stock from the outside.

Would I do it again? You betcha. Smile

Ok so here's my two cents.
I love the Buick v6, I have one in my 3b behind a t18 4 speed, the claim that they are nothing special doesn't make any sense to me. With a mild build it and 50Lb flywheel it has tons of torque, and and just the right amount of power for a light Jeep. It will chug  down to 100RPM's and it can burn the tires off the jeep on the other end...I had my 3B going 80 with the windshield down, talk about insane!   To me it's a special little bruiser of an engine, and s one of the best engines ever put in a jeep. They are getting harder to find parts I hear though.

Now the VW TDI
The VW 1.9L turbo diesel out of the MK4 Jetta's etc. is one of the best motors ever made.  In stock form sure they are a little mahh... But they run for ever and are simple.  Now the fun part.  You can swap a 4 bar map, free flow exhaust some bigger injectors and a stage 4 tune and you have a 1.9L with that just went from 90HP to -over 150 HP and in the ballpark of 300 ft/lbs of torque!!! and Folks ALL THAT in a 1.9L!!! And on top of that still dead reliable and a 300-500K mile motor!   SO I'm not really sure why this is a so so option.

The F head
A little improvement over an L head, but really not that noticeable, issues with hood clearance... but it's an easy swap, and they can be had cheap.

My vote:
Sell the V6 to me, (I need one for my projectWink)  Go all in and put a VW TDI in.  I've seen it in person and it's amazing...and Millennial Falcon hasn't even started really playing with power yet.Big smile
