East Coast Willys Rubicon trip

There is a group of us out here that talk about this trip every so often, usually getting all fired up after all the videos from Jeffs trip.  Smile

in our discussions, we are leaning towards shipping the Jeeps out there, more than driving from upper New England.    We have guys who have been out to Moab, and other far trips, so the driving isnt the real issue, its the time.  The road trip would be epic, but its a lot of time in the pickup, when the goal is to  be driving the Willys.   So 6-8+ days of driving in the trucks to only drive the Willys 2-3 days just doesn't sound appealing.

We are thinking of shipping a full enclosed truck of willys,  6 give or take,  out there, have someone we trust receive them, we fly out, run the Rubicon 2- 3 days, explore the area within a couple hundred miles or so,  old towns , back roads etc.  Maybe hit JJ headquarters in Georgetown.   Then leave the willys with the receiver to be shipped back out.  This person and others would be more then welcome to join us.  But they would need to have someplace to tuck the jeeps while we come and go.  Obviously we don't want to have them dropped off in some Walmart parking lotLOL

Our very preliminary discussions with a well known national vehicle shipper puts the cost about $1000 round trip per jeep.  So for a once in a lifetime trip, the costs are not too bad.

our biggest questions right now are:
1, finding someone local to receive,  send out and store the shipment of jeeps for a couple of days.
2, what to do in the area within a couple hundred miles of the Rubicon for 4-6 days

would love to hear any thoughts or suggestions on the trip

Shipping Jeeps out, and flying, would shorten the number of days,  and seems to be the way to go.       This does not help with your planning,  but I thought I would share our recent experience  (driving from Virginia,  out and back).     I was dreading the trip beforehand,  . . .  but it was not as bad as I expected.    I did have to use 7 vacation days though.

When I woke up each morning,  and knew that I would be spending most of the day in the truck,  it did not bother me while on the road.   The only time I thought "when will this ever end !"  was the last 3 hours of the trip home.  haha     

It was actually kinda interesting traveling across the country,  and seeing the terrain change as we went.    There is some beautiful scenery,  even from the Interstates.    (or  if not beautiful,  just different :-) 

Some statistics:  We had 2 drivers in 3/4 ton diesel pickup,   we traveled approx 5700 miles,  truck ran for 90 hours,   $1370 for diesel fuel,  $700 for hotels.    Hundreds of memories.   LOL

Hope it all works out for you . .  definitely worth it.

A bunch of us from Pennsylvania shipped our Jeeps out to the Rubicon about 3 years ago. We hired a car hauler and shipped, I think, 9 Jeeps out. They were not CJ2As, so we couldn't pack it as tightly as you might with 2As. One of our group flew out a couple of days early and met the car carrier. He and his wife wanted to visit Tahoe anyhow. The hotel where we stayed the nights before and after the trail allowed us to unload and keep the Jeeps in their parking lot.
We did the trail and then he and another guy again met the carrier for the return trip. A couple of us met the carrier back in PA and took the Jeeps to a fellow Jeepers farm that was right off of the interstate. They stayed on the farm and then we came individually and drove them home.

It was way more than $1000 a piece, more like $2300 per Jeep. It was a huge hassle getting them loaded so they wouldn't be over height and over weight and the weight balanced on each axle. It was a PITA, but we are talking about doing it again! It was great to spend time on vacation and not just driving. Several members of the group rented cars and hit the sights of California and Nevada, then flew home from where ever.

There is a few good trails near the rubicon such as Barrett jeep trail usually doesn’t open tell late July but just depends on when the trail is dry from the winter. Deer valley jeep trail a short trail about 7 miles long but still a fun trail with good views. Also a few trails the connect to the rubicon on the Tahoe side like buck lake and barker pass are fun trails also. Let me know the dates you guys are planning to run the trail I would like to tag along I’m an hour from the trail head.

My goal is to make the Rubicon run next year.  Have started to consider all of my options also.  Would be great to travel out with a group if there is room on the truck.
