Well, my trailer is in the final stages of being finished. I tore it completely apart and had it chemical dipped/stripped, welded all the extra holes, put new bearings and races in the axle, and now it's at the paint shop. I decided to go with a semi-gloss acrylic enamel in Ford tractor red.

I found a lot of green under red but decided to go red because as thoroughly as the coverage of red was (under fender seams, between spring/axle) I figured it may have been a dealer re-paint job. And I like red better.

I'll post pictures before during and after when I get it together.

Great!...can't wait to see the finished product.  Do you have pics of the during restoration part?  Would love to see them.

Thanks,

Here's what I started with. A pretty solid and complete 1947 trailer. It had some extra holes added to the back panels for additional tail lights but the only thing missing was the original tail light. The floor has waves from use but is solid and the tailgate was beat up a little. But overall it was very nice and usable in its current condition.

I pulled it all apart. Only broke 2 bolts. This is also when I realized that it had undercoating across the bottom and inside of the fenders. I thought about scraping it myself as it had already started to separate from the metal. After a few minutes of that I decided maybe it'd be best to have it dipped, which actually turned out real nice. I didn't get any pictures of the after dipping but I was surprised to see a complete trailer remaining and not a block of swiss cheese.

Metalshaper fixed me up with a very nice tailgate so I had the original hinges fixed up and welded back on. Also got my wiring harness from Vintage Wiring of Maine to wire up the NOS Arrow tail lamp. I plan to have a spare so I got 3 of the Firestone black wall tires from Coker Tire. Obviously, plan to put the new u-bolts on and then some of the original bolt were pretty beat so I decided to replace with new, but the fender bolts will be reused as well as the landing leg bolts and a few others. I did find and interesting marking on the fender bolts...all 12 were marked this way, the other bolts were just the usual "A" or "EC" marked.

Finished! By no means a perfect restoration, kept most of the dents and dings in it. I just wanted to preserve it more than anything. I'm happy how it turned out. Now I need to find a 2A to pull it.

Wow, CONGRATULATIONS are in order.  She looks great!!!!!  She even looks like mine in that red color.  Do you know the code color on that?  Did you had it powder coat or painted?

Thanks,

Joel

You did a great job, it looks very nice.

Curious.... how long did the whole project take start to finish?

Hey Brian:

From start to finished I think it took me 7 months.  Why so long you might ask?  Well, lots of research on my part, at first.  Looking for parts was the other side and then looking for a good place to have it sandblasted and powder coated.  Not to mention the waiting time for parts and what not.  But once it got started it went pretty fast.  I had it sandblasted, powder coated and assembled back together in about 12 days.

Of course, I ran into some minor problems along the way, like ran out of money and had to wait till paydays, that type of thing but hey, I had lots of fun and learned lots of things along the way.  I asked lots of questions and in the process I learned how to weld and do other things like packing the bearings.  Little things like that.

I now have yet another project with a B1 and even though I have not seen the trailer yet, I'm starting to get ready for it right now.  Doing lots of research on it and well, the usual asking the dumb questions now so that I don't get bit in the rear later, you know what I mean?

But your trailer looks excellent.  I know what you meant when you said you left the dings on the trailer.  Some how they look more attractive with them than without them, don't you think?  Hey, I see lot's of CJ2A's for sale on Craigslist and on eBay all the time.  Do your research well and you'll find what you are looking for in no time.

Question.  Did you undercoat the trailer like it was or you just left it plain?  I thought about undercoating mine but decided against it in the end.  It just looks a heck of a lot better.  Won't be seeing snow or mud any time soon on that finished trailer.  Looks to good now to get dirty, lol :P  If you can believe that.  Nah, it's more for shows now.

I started tearing it down in July of this year. Not too long ago, although for a simple trailer it seems like a long time. I went with an enamel paint, no undercoating and left the waves in the floor. New tires, harness and chain covers. The rest is original or nos. I pulled the stencil off the BT3-C page and it's painted on in an off-white. I told the wife that it only cost about $3k to make a $1200 trailer. She laughed a little, not sure if I was pulling her leg.

Dave:

LOL, that was just too funny.  Wife's tend to have that dry sense of humor, don't they?  I was going through a divorce at the time I was doing my restoration so there was little she could say about it.  I ended up spending well over 3K on mine but in the end of it I think it was all well worth it as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think I can get that much money out of this little trailer so that's why I'm keeping her.  If I was to ever sell her I don't know what to ask for her but that IS if I was to sell her.  Not planning on selling her any time soon.  I just recently acquired the bows and sides and I'm going to restore them and then have the canvas cover made for it, so I'm still spending money on this project so I don't know if there will ever be an end to it but is all good, I'm having a good time with it.

Here is my Bantam already to go.  Looks a lot like yours in color, don't you think?  BTW...Where did you find the tailgate chain covers?  I need a pair, that's why I'm asking.  Thanks Tongue

Looks good. Is that Ford Tractor Red? I went with an enamel paint, to answer your earlier question.  And I got the tailgate chain covers from beachwoodcanvas.com. You can do a search on their website for the civilian trailer parts and they should come right up.

Dave....I can't remember off the top of my head right now what the color scheme was on my trailer.  I know that it was powder color...I think it was flaming hot red or something like that.

Thanks for the info on the tailgate covers.  I'll check that out.  Hopefully they'll have what I'm looking for.  I wanted to go with a black color but if canvas is all they have, then I'm gonna have to go with that, I guess.

I want to say they give you the option of a black canvas too. You select it as you are checking out, if I remember correctly.

Hey Dave...I did see the option on there and I have just placed the order.  What got me was that it was $16.00 dollars PLUS $4.00 for the colored material.  Oh well, I already placed the order and have received the confirmation email.

Thanks for the link and the info.  That truly helped me out.
