NO not only 2wd Willys had the Vacuum advance distributors JUST NOT THE CJ's a 4wd Wagon with a 134L or F head would have had a Vacuum Distributor as would a Pickup including the FC-150 which my Vacuum advance distributor number shows it as being stock for a 1961 FC-150 with a 134L All FC's were 4wd.

Thanks for all of the good advice. The information and advice all-you-all (I do live in Mississippi ) have given convinces me to follow my plan of some further clean up and go to work on the rest of the machine having confidence in that engine. I will, as suggested check the crankshaft and rod big ends bearings while I have he oil pan down for clean out. The other engine I will stabilize for now and hold for a future complete rebuild project or maybe offer for sale in the future depending. My apologies about being unclear in my original post. By "replacement engine" I meant that PO had bought an engine from another party to install in this Jeep which apparently came to him with either no or a junk engine. You have also confirmed what I have subsequently learned, that only 2WD Jeep vehicles would have had a vacuum advance dist. but that should not matter when I rebuild it as I can just acquire and install the correct distributor.
Thanks again to all. I am certain that I still will have innumerable future questions as this proceeds. I see the section of the website where others are posting photos and reports about their projects. I'll start one for everyone to look at when we are home from our mid summer trip to the annual national tractor show RPRU2019. Dave

Welcome Farmall !
Like you, I have resurrected many an older engine from the dead, and have only experience rebuilding One L134 engine. It sounds to me like your current engine is very healthy, but if concerned, I would simply tear it down and inspect every part closely and plasit-guage those clearances. You can run looser-tolerances than the book says. An example of loose-tolerances is that rod journal on grandpa's jeep the wore through the bearing-babbit material and on-through the steel-backing on the bearing. Those are some LOOSE Operating-Tolerances. I was just reading through JeepsterJim's project thread, and he just scored on a bunch of jeep parts. If he is not careful, his wife may toss his clothes out into the driveway with all those Jeep Parts. hahahaha Have fun, and enjoy the Willys addiction. Len |

...and/or Kaiser sedan- I'm unclear what your PO meant by "replacement engine"... you could buy an "R" serialized new crate engine to replace a worn out original, or replacement could mean just any old L134 not rebuilt and swapped in... fwiw, your GPW with gear drive components, while unusual, isn't the first. If it's running good I'd run it. Maybe rebuild the 3A as a non urgent project backup in case, or do it for a planned swap because that GPW block is desirable to the GPW crowd... ymmv Me? As above, I'd run it

No CJ 134L had a Vacuum Advance distributor. That would have been Jeepster, Wagon, FC, Pickup.

Dave - as you've described the engine it sounds lke it's healthy.
If your goal is a dependable driver - seems it already is (assuming brakes, steering, trans & TC are good). If it we me, I'd rebuild the spare engine, pickle it for storage & swap out only if needed. Old flatfender to cruise a tractor show - way cool. Bob

Hello. I am relatively new to this site but I have read and valued a great number of posts here. Incredible resource for technical information. I have a lot of experience with vintage machinery as a Farmall tractor re-builder / collector. Then, last October I fell over backward into a jeep project. I have a 1946 -ish CJ2A that has led a hard life, being really beat up and mistreated but I am going to bring it back.
Anyway enough introduction. I would like to have an opinion from the experts here about engines. When I bought this Jeep the PO told me that it had a replacement engine in it. He told me that it was a cam drive engine. It has a Ford GPW serial number and the block casting number is GPW-6015 so I was believing that it was a chain drive camshaft engine from a Ford GPW. Then, ! took the timing chain cover off to cure an oil leak and I found a gear drive camshaft arrangement. I know about the differences in gear drive and chain drive camshafts from reading posts here and I want to ask for opinions about what seems to be an engine build up on the GPW block with later type components. Any advice about problems or issues that I should be looking out for or correcting? This engine runs well, just like a little sewing machine, it just hums along, compression on all 4 cylinders is 110 PSI, holds good oil pressure and does not drop when hot. Have not checked valve lash yet but no clacking or undue ticking indicating a problem. What could go wrong with such a massive transplant? Any suggestions about things to do / check will be most welcome. I did get a second engine in the deal which seems to be from a CJ3A, it has a vacuum advance distributor. Should i plan to rebuild that engine and swap out? My objective is to have a reliable, drive-able jeep that my wife and i can enjoy riding around in and perhaps take to tractor shows instead of a golf cart. Thanks, Dave PS, I would put in some photos but I'm worried about file size.
